Get up and Run! A health initiative by the City Council

Before the Carnival mas bands take to the roads, several organizations intend to take over the streets this Saturday morning.  Get Up and Run is a health initiative coordinated by: the Belize Amateur Athletic Association, the Belize Diabetes Association, the Olympic Association, the Ministry of Health, the National Secondary Schools Sports Association and the Belize City Council. With the aid of a nutritionist, the various associations hope to reboot, stimulate and return Belizeans to a healthy lifestyle. According to Belize City Mayor Zenaida Moya Flowers, starting at six a.m., they hope you will Get Up and Run with them.

“The Belize City Council in conjunction with the major sport organizations and health organizations will be launching the get up and run program this Saturday. At six o’clock we will be having free registrations from the four respective zones and thereafter we will be moving to the city center starting six-thirty. At seven o’clock we should have arrived from these four respective zones. Whichever zone is closest to individuals they should go. The four starting points will be; for zone one BUCA shell on the northern highway; zone two is the Marion Jones stadium; Zone three is the Sister Clara Muhammed School at the corner of Faber’s Road and Central American Boulevard and Zone four is the Education Building behind the Charles Hyde complex. So, individuals nearest to any of these zones, that’s where they go to. Six thirty leaving from these zone to city center. The launch starts at seven a.m. sharp where we will have key organizations speaking and thereafter we will be opening it up and having a mini health expo. It is done because we understand that physical activity is a major public health problem. It contributes to a variety of chronic diseases and health complications including: obesity, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, depression and anxiety, arthritis and osteoporoses. We are hoping to move individuals to get up and run or get up and move—if it means that they will be walking or riding a bicycle if they feel running is not their forte. The point si we just want them to get up and run. We’re hoping that by improving the overall health, improving exercise and physical activity; that this will help to prevent and treat the chronic diseases. As you know medical cost is very expensive, so if we can move towards preventative measure we should be able to listen in terms of the curative costs.”
