P.M. trounces squatters are opportunists preying on Belizean people

While the P.M. waits for B.E.L.’s Lynn Young to sit with him at a meeting on Friday to find out if Fortis will invest more into the company, others won’t have to wait to hear from the P.M. The Chetumal Street squatters held a small demonstration in Belize City on Tuesday morning. They want land and they made it clear they also wanted Barrow to speak. Barrow called the squatters exploitive and opportunists who wanted to ride the gravy train as well as prey on the sympathies of the Belizean people. Barrow said that those second wave of squatters did not live in the area where the bridge would be built but in other parts of the city.

Dean Barrow

“When there are those who, in the name of community organizations, when there are those that seek to insight mayhem and chaos instead of offering solutions to the undoubted problems that exist, I want you to remember that the vast majority, by far, the vast majority Citizens of this country are going about their lawful business day after day in an orderly and productive manner. In terms of the Chetumal Street Extension squatters, well I want to say to the media that I believe you’ve been had. There is no doubt in my mind that in addition to the few persons that were at that spot when the police conducted their operations, in addition to those persons who can make a case, a host of others coming from various areas including the area behind the burial ground, a host of other persons became extremely opportunistic, exploitative and sought to ride what they believed would become a gravy train—aided and assisted by those to whom I referred earlier in my remarks to you. Well government was never going to tolerate that.

Dean Barrow

The police insist that when they went there that morning, there were only two structures that were occupied—one by a lady with three children and we made provisions for that lady. The police did not dismantle the structure because the lady was very cooperative and said she would get out on her own, by twelve o’clock that day. And one other gentleman, who was a single occupier as far as the police could tell and he ran away. The others that descended on the spot and took children there in the early morning and then invited the camera in so they could hold up crying babies and prey on the sympathies of the Belizean people, are by and large fraudsters. And I make no apologies for saying this. As I said I don’t know if the media was duped or played along, for its own reasons, but I am satisfied that the government did what it was legally and morally obliged to do in this circumstances. You can tell me all you like about the fact that the processes in the Ministry of Natural Resources are not working in the way they should. You can tell me there are shortcomings. You can tell me that we need to do better at getting land to people who in fact apply and try to follow the normal procedures. And I can tell you that I accept the criticism; I’m sure the deputy Prime Minister would as well. The ministry had put themselves on location—they had not been there prior to the police operation—but even those were offered hotel accommodation for themselves and their children. And by the end of the day, all of them said no we won’t need to take up the offer. Now they didn’t say we’re going to go back where we live, they did say we would be able to find accommodations with friends and family—they went back where they lived.”

The Prime Minister says that the government has invested five million dollars in new management information system for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Lands Department so the procedures can be improved.

  1. Lucas says:

I have friends whose leases were put on hold in the Carmelita expansion area. The lease holders paid three hundred dollares for surveying and paid lease taxes. We want that hold to end and the house lots returned to the rightful lease holder. You want INDEPENDENTS go red in that constituency, end the hold.By the way, we independents do not approve on squatting.

  2. Wil says:

I agree with the Prime Minister. We all need to abide by the law. Squatting is a big problem in this country and under no circumstances should we tolerate this. The media and COLA seem to be encouraging this illegal activity.

  3. Rod says:

This shows that this pm is just prejudice against the Spanish people useless pm and gov. Can’t get anything right worse gov in the history of Belize.

  4. SickOfItAll says:

And you are preying on our money burrow, so that makes you no different. Can’t you the belizeans see that burrow only says these things to cover up for what he did, He is just like them….They preying on our sympathies but burrow and the whole government is preying on our Tax Money! Nothing has been gotten done! Its not until now that elections are near that you see him trying to fix streets located behind belama and etc. Before he was elected there was an advertisement with this man saying mean things about spanish people! He is a racist and still got voted as the PM what idiots do we have in bze! We cannot have a racist being our PM because belize is made up of lotta mixtures! Let me not say anymore because I am not being heard. Once again Sick and Tired of this Govt!

  5. Storm says:

    To “Rod”:

You can’t say that the motive that existed behind the undertaking of this action by the current administration was “racist”. If it was, then the evidence that’s available to the public in regard to this case would have demonstrated the validity of such an assertion to everyone involved, and, from I (and many others) can see, that is not what it does. Instead, the only thing that it does is to demonstrate that these people broke the law by squatting on properties that were under the control of the government and, as a result of that, they had to pay the consequences of their illegal actions. If they didn’t want to suffer the fate that they suffered, then, they should have followed the law like all other law-abiding individuals.

    And to “Wil”:

I absolutely concur with your statement.

  6. Elgin Martinez says:

The PM definately didn’t call these people oppertunist when some of them were giving him or his counterparts their votes.

  7. Storm says:

    To “SickOfItAll”:

Where’s the racism in the action that the current administration undertook? I don’t see it. If it was there, then, as I indirectly said to the user named “Rod”, it would have been apparent to everyone involved. Again, what happened was that a group of people were illegally squatting on land belonging to the government and because of that, they suffered the consequences of their actions. So, instead of trying to validate the continuation of this kind of behaviour with unjustified accusations of “racism”, maybe you should try to see it from the perspective of the government and support what they’re doing instead, as they are attempting to create a more civil society.

  8. get it right says:

I’m glad that the GOB did their investigation and now the Belizean public can see that some people just try to manipulate the system. Why do you think that the same lady with her children , that they didnt take down her house, was not part of the protests. I was wondering how the government did not point this out earlier as i was sayng this from the issue came out. I agree fully with the GOB on this issue. Just these so called independent groups along with the PUP stirring up trouble for their own gain. Everyone knows that Belizeans for Justice and COLA are politically affiliated with PUP.

  9. PG GYAL says:

I agree with the PM on this one…it is true my Belizeans. Squatters come to our country and just get land…..BUT can we do that in another country…HELL NO!!!!! We cannot allow this to happen as soon your sons and daughters will not have any land…..DO YOU WANT THAT TO HAPPEN???? i think not…..i am a UB student and i want a peice of land but rite now it is extremely difficult !!!! WE Belizeans have to look out for ourselves instead of tolerating squatters….

  10. WESTERNMERMAID says:

  11. EMS says:

Historically, squatting has been a way of life in Belize. We have much, much, much more land than people and historically, more foreigners own more land in Belize than many Belizeans. Wake up Belize. What else is new Belize.

  15. ESSB says:

It’s all political; squatting is illegal but the manner in which these people went in to the area was not correct.

  16. Elgin Martinez says:

We’re saying that these people come to our country and took our land.My question to you all is who let these people into our country?Thesame politicians that are now victimizing them.

hold it down marion. no becauz the man embarass you you haffi get radical.

  19. I Have Awaken says:

“Storm” speaks in lawyer-speak. Tongue of a serpent. What is been lost in translation is the fact that these HUMAN BEINGS were treated like wild beasts; with no dignity and respect. Yes, the law is the law, I believe everyone agrees to that, even COLA, however HUMAN BEINGS should be treated as such, for Christsakes, what’s so hard for you, ‘Storm’, to understand that fact.

“storm” you are guilty of typical fallacious argument and you are obviously using some of the rules of disinformation.

  20. Time says:

Remember people. Most if not all of us have some history with the original squatters. Remember the settlement of the new world? Those squatters not only took land but killed the owners of these land and forced them into a minority and in some parts they were placed on camps and reserves..

Remember that many Belizeans have family elsewhere that this could happen to…

We are all humans, and should be treated as that. Despite that fact that they may be illegal, that give no one any rights to treat others like animals.

How fast people are to jump up in defense of the Gay community but yet they trod all over other people as if they were nothing and then they have the audacity to say the are for human rights.
