Dr. Enrique Guerra dead after severely beaten by robbers

Enrique Guerra

Turning to other news, a well-known doctor was assaulted and robbed two weeks ago in Orange Walk Town. Thieves got away with Dr. Enrique Guerra’s cash, credit card and cell phones. He was brutally beaten and suffered severe injuries to his head.  Despite three rounds of surgery, he remained comatose and this morning he passed away. Charges on five persons will now be upgraded to murder. Included is a prisoner who was injured when a van that was transporting inmates overturned on the Northern Highway. News Five’s Andrea Polanco reports.

Andrea Polanco, Reporting

In the early hours of Saturday morning of May twenty first, forty two year old Dr. Enrique Guerra was walking on Main Street in Orange Walk Town heading to a nearby ATM machine. Guerra never reached his destination:

Alberto Guerra, Nephew of deceased

“In the early hours of that Saturday morning my uncle Dr. Guerra was making his way to an ATM on Main Street, unfortunately he never did make it to the ATM and we understand that he was ambushed by five assailants who viciously attacked him while he was on the pedestrian ramp. And as a result of the attack he sustained major injuries to his head so he was hospitalized since May twenty first.”

Andrea Polanco

“When he was ambushed was he attacked with a weapon or so, does the family know anything about that?”

Alberto Guerra

“It’s still uncertain, what is certain is that as the result of the attack  the injuries received were only to the head only to the head it’s still not sure if his head was kicked against the pavement or if a blunt object was used. But he did receive severe brain injuries all around the head.”

And it was those brain injuries that left Guerra in a coma until this morning when he passed away at the KHMH:

Alberto Guerra

“Ever since the attack he never regained consciousness, never regain he had a little movement on and off but never he was unable to speak or able to communicate with anyone since the incident.”

Andrea Polanco

“In the early hours of this morning Dr. Guerra passed away?”

Alberto Guerra

“Yes unfortunately Dr. Guerra is no longer with us.  He passed away at exactly one fifty this morning at KHMH while still in a in coma.”

Alberto Guerra says that the loss of his uncle is not only personal but the grief is a collective one shared by the community:

Alberto Guerra

“For the past couple years he was serving the Orange Walk community. He worked in two private clinics offering his services. Dr. Guerra was very well appreciated by the community. We always knew that and even now with the incident we’ve had several of his patients come forward and share their experiences with us and how satisfied they were with him. Something very remarkable was a few of his patients shared that they went to him and even though they didn’t have the full payment for the consultation he would still go ahead and provide the medical services required. Some would have part payment some would have no payment at all but nonetheless he would never neglect the attention needed. Serving the community was his passion in the medical field.”

In connection with the attack on the Doctor, Richard Berry, Alejandro Nunez and Crispin Moreno were remanded to the Hattieville prison on attempt murder charges.  Two minors were sent to the Youth Hostel. Police say the charge will be upgraded to murder by the end of the week. Reporting for News Five, I am Andrea Polanco.

Crispin Moreno is the injured prisoner who remains hospitalized after a prison van overturned around mile thirty-seven on the Northern Highway. Delbert McLaughlin, a prison warden was killed in the accident.
