P.M. says ministers will soon remove dark vehicle tints

The tinting law came into effect on June first; that is Wednesday of this week. However, it is very evident in the capital and on the road, that many government ministers still have heavy tinted windshields on their vehicles. News Five asked the Prime Minister if there is a special clause or loop hole that allows the ministers to continue drive behind those dark government vehicles.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“I believe they had said there will be a month’s grace period. I have certainly said to ministers all of you who have tints must take them off so that the public can be assured that this is not a question of one law for them and a different law certainly for politicians. That is clear. In terms of government vehicle not driven by politicians, same rule applies except for the police. I’m sure people will understand that there may be police vehicle that for purposes of surveillance, for purposes of clandestine operations, might need to be tinted, but I know of no other agencies, of no other department and certainly of no minister that can justify continuing with the tints given that the law has been pass. There may be some who are taking advantage of the one month’s grace period, but there has to be compliance ultimately in accordance with the law by all government agencies, all government officials, all government personalities.”

The one month extension period to either remove or adjust the tint ratio on vehicles will come in effect on July first.

How will the police pull off a clandestine operation with dark tinted glass if the law is enforced? If the law is enforced, the police will be the only ones with dark tinted glass, which, I would think, would be a dead tip-off to a drug dealer with a modicum of sense that the car with the dark tinted windows holds police. I was in Belize City on Friday and almost every car I saw had dark tinted windows. Yes, there is a 30 days grace period, but “grace” doesn’t mean you HAVE to wait 30 days to get it taken off. The law is now actually the law. They’ll enforce this law just like they do all the others – such as seat belt laws.

  2. Karen says:

These Ministers should be leading by example, therefore I’m assuming that until such time, there will be no tickets issued to regular citizen who have not had the opportunity to remove their tints as yet.

  3. marion ali says:

police to be allowed to keep their tints for clandestine operations? doesn’t make too much sense to me. if they are the only ones who will be using tinted vehicles, then won’t we know they are the police?

  4. Gazombadam says:

Its funny how the PM says that there is no different laws for the ministers. But countless of times we have seen ministers who go across the border and they bring almost anything back to Belize without them even been searched by the customs. I have seen a certain minister of cayo bringing lots of soft drinks and beers…. recently we saw him bringing plants with soil and no one does anything about it… so are they above the law? Makes us wonder when the PM says these things if he really say these things to their ministers… lip service i would say…

  5. Joe McGuire says:

That is SOOOOOOO Smart, so now criminals know after July if the car has tint, they are police, yes Mr. Barrow very smart idea, that’s how you get people killed!

  6. RedBwai says:

Ha,…. i’ll believe it when i see it…..there are always some special clause for the “ministers”…

  7. HATE COUNRTY RITE NOW says:

the police should remove their tints too. i guess that the minister should have been the first to take off their prints, but as what people would say they make the laws and they are the same ones to break it.

  8. Maverick says:

So who will ticket the ministers if they don’t comply? Police officer giving a ticket to a Minster or his driver for having a tinted government-owned vehicle..? Really hope the ministers do comply so there would be no need to test this, because surely no officer would dare.

  9. jose says:

Mr. PM, don’t forget to have this Law/rule delegated to your Customs and Excise officers, who are so “Special” and play above the law.

  10. Eye in the Sky says:

So that mean when the Zetas do arrive (which they will one day) they will shoot any car with tinting and they know they got the police. WHO IS THE IDIOT ? Who came up with the idea that police can have tinting so they can be “stealth” from the people without tinting ?
Right now almost all cars have tinting and you never know when the police or someone who can report you to the police is watching you.

  11. Jessie James says:

WOW these UDP’s really know how to lose an election.
Mess with our vehicles and we Belizean get very mad. This is the only real luxury we have in Belize.
We have spent a lot of money tinting our vehicles. Some older vehicles have been tinted for over 10 years.
The idiots who started this law should:
Any new vehicle arriving in Belize must not have tinting or it can not be imported, registered or licensed for the first time.
At checkpoints the traffic officers check the registration and if your vehicle was imported and registered after 1st June, 2011 a ticket will be issued. They can almost tell newer vehicles by looking at the plate numbers.
WE DO KNOW THAT THIS LAW WILL BE FOR ONLY SOME AND NOT ALL NO MATER WHAT BARROW WANTS.
TIME TO RISE UP LIKE EGYPT, LIBYA, YEMEN and others or they will continue to kick the Belizeans in the A$$.

  12. Justice says:

Everyone should remoive their tint. Unfortinately Belize is like “animal farm” where all men are equal but some are more equal than others!

  13. belizeanpride says:

you’ve lost already 17 votes bald head barrow good for nothing but stupidity. the rest of my family has agreed to not vote for the udp for doing some stupid things like this. hope you enjoy this last days of reign as a dictator pm. that $135. i spent in my tint will cost you votes that will make you more fool than ever with such ideas that come from no where. black man the kill black man more than ever on bikes not cars but to you seems like the tint will curb the crime, jeez you’re a joke pm.

  14. Elgin Martinez says:

Maybe the PM should focus on removing the guns off the streets instead. All these laws and yet the conviction rate is at 3% are useless at the end of the day.

  15. I Have Awaken says:

Everyone has valid points; which of course, are against people removing their tints for it is a pointless law.

Boil it all away and you simply got another law focusing on the symptom and not the source of crime.

In a year or more this law will completely be forgotten and people will simply go right back to tinting their vehicles and as some said above; killing each other using bicycles.
