WIN Belize feeds squatters

Agatha Gordon

After seeing the unfortunate conditions of squatters televised on Wednesday following a pre-dawn operation in the Fabers Road Extension that destroyed their homes, the Women’s Issues Network has stepped in to lend assistance to the displaced families.  Today, the organization visited with the area known as Gungulung and offered food for the day.  According to Agatha Gordon, a plan is being devised to provide short to medium term help for the families until the issue is resolved.

Agatha Gordon, Program Officer, WIN Belize

“When we saw the footage last night on the news we realized that it’s a lot of women and children who are being affected by this situation.  So we decided to do something immediately which is to bring out some food to the families because of course we are Women Issues Network and that was our immediate plan.  We will be looking at some more [plans] or what else we can do for them in the interim.”

“I was also made to understand that you guys are looking at some kind of plan to assist them in the way forward.  Is this a short term, long or medium [term] plan?”

Agatha Gordon

WIN Belize advocates for women and families so we will definitely get together as a network and see what we can do for these families okay.  I’m at the secretariat [level] so we cannot make decisions on our own.  We will need to get together all nineteen member agencies and see what the plan will be for these families.  But we believe that people should be treated with some human dignity and with respect.  We believe that we should abide by the law as citizens of Belize, don’t get me wrong.  Yes we should abide by the law.  We live in a country that has laws so we definitely should honor and respect them but we also believe that to enforce the law it must be done with respect as well, you know, in the proper way.”

Isani Cayetano

“To see the footage that was aired in the media yesterday and to be on the ground and [you’re] seeing the plight of these people.  What is your opinion now that you have seen what they are going through firsthand?”

Agatha Gordon

“It’s very touching Isani, I am a mother and I can’t imagine what they are going through.  You know, I’m seeing it but still, I guess if you are in their shoes then it would be very different.  And we will definitely see what we can do to assist our Belizean people.”
