Belizeans for Justice’s Yolanda Schakron taken to police station

Yolanda Schakron was at the frontline when squatters marched into the city and blocked the Belcan Bridge. Schakron is an outspoken member of Belizeans for Justice, who has been forthright against the police and corruption in the department. During Wednesday’s civil unrest, Schakron clashed with the police and this morning when word came that she would arrested, she headed to the station. She says she is fearless. News Five’s Jose Sanchez was at Queen Street as the crowd lined the streets in solidarity.

During Wednesday’s blockade on Belcan Bridge, Belizeans For Justice members were in the middle of the scuffle between police officers and the Chetumal Street Squatters.    And because of the bridge blockade, this afternoon Schakron walked into the Queen Street Police Station compound where she was told she would be arrested and charged for her part in the skirmish.

Joan Sutherland, Belizeans For Justice

“What they are accusing her is that she assaulted a policeman. Mr. Grinage came and said that you all get off the bridge or you all will be moved by force. They start pushing us and one of the policeman pushed Miss Yolanda on her breast amongst the crowd and Miss Yolanda just did her hand like that—I mean you can see it on the camera. And they are accusing her that she assaulted a policeman. So that’s what they charging her for assault right now. I got hit yesterday by a policeman. I got a bruise right here. I know who hit me. But if I go in there to press charges I won’t [get anywhere] because they will say I didn’t have a permit.”

Spectators and supporters for the founding Belizeans for Justice Member stood across from the station and waited.  In addition to some squatters, the Belize Bus Association President, still fresh from the flames of his protest, stopped by to offer support.

Thomas Shaw, President, Belize Bus Association

“When I saw it on the news last night, actually tears came to my eyes. I think they could have done it in a different manner. They could have tried assisting these people in moving their home instead of just breaking it down. When we got over there a while ago, we heard that they had Miss Schakron up here so that’s the reason why we are here to give our support and see what we can do.”

Jose Sanchez

“Is it simply because you’re all protestors for different causes? Is that what it is—the connection?”

Thomas Shaw

“Well basically, she’s an activist and you don’t do that to an activist. We have rights and these people are there to make sure that the public is protected.”

And after being processed, Schakron emerged to cheers.

Yolanda Schakron, Belizeans for Justice

“First of all I want to say thanks to the lord that I am here. I wanna say that I feel stronger. I wanna say thanks to everyone that came out to support me. God Bless You! This is a show of true democracy. We will not be intimidated. I have gotten stronger now. I will not stop. The work has just began.”

Jose Sanchez

“Miss Schakron, what were the charges against you?”

Yolanda Schakron

“They were going to charge with aggravated assault. I had been profiled, I had been fingerprinted, processed everything already. But they haven’t charged me with anything as yet. They said they will be contacting my attorneys because they want cooler heads to prevail. I guess the crowd out here has intimidated them. So I really wanna thank you all. Thank you very much.”

Arthur Saldivar, Attorney

“When I came, Miss Schakron was being processed. However, as far as I am aware now, the charges or the intended charges have been dismissed, they aren’t continuing along that course of action—from what I’ve been made to understand. I may be surprised at the end of the day, but all indications are that they are not proceeding.”

Now that the bus association, the squatters and activist groups are showing unity, it’s quite possible the roads and bridges may be reheated before tensions cool with the coming rains.  Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.

Yolanda, I know that you are trying to follow Gandhi & MLK’s teachings. If you have not read it, The King Years 1954-63 is an excellent blue print for someone who wants to make change through civil disobedience. Stay focused, get out of the political mess if it’s not too late & don’t be a camera hog. Oops , never mind, it will be entertaining to watch you & Arthur tripping each other & telling us conflicting stories.. Good luck.
