Leader of the Opposition says squatters should take government to court

John Briceno

Once the protestors had been forcibly removed from the bridge, they gathered in front of the Farmers Market. Not too long after, they were met by a PUP delegation led by Opposition Leader, John Briceño, area representative Cordel Hyde and attorney Anthony Saldivar, who interrupted a national executive meeting to lend support to the squatters.  While the heated confrontation may not have been politically motivated the opposition reps took turns addressing the gathering.  In light of the excessive use of force against the minors who were caught in the clash with the security forces, Briceño suggested that legal action be taken by the evicted squatters against the government.

John Briceno, Opposition Leader

“Well certainly we already have our legal advisor thats here with us and he will be assisting some of them that have been already detained as Ive been told and were going to find ways how we can, if necessary, sue the government for the behavior that they have displayed right here.  For the damages and even the emotional distress that theyve been causing not only to the families but even to the children and this is certainly unacceptable in 2011 in Belize. Since the day they have been elected they have been taking away people’s lands.  They have been taking away their jobs, taking away contracts and just victimizing everybody simply because they believe they have this twenty-five to six [majority] in the House.  We know that they have this huge majority but for them to come out here and chance these poor people man this is unacceptable and we as a party, we as an opposition we are not going to stand beside that.  It shows that again, the city council, that they have failed miserably man.  Where is the city council?  What are they doing to try to help these poor people man?  This we will not stand by and just accept this.  We’re going to stand with these people and we’re going to find a way how we can help them.”

You were part of the reason this country went to !@$$ Briceno, now you want try play like you care bout the people. Stop stirring trouble and using people’s sorrow and tribulations to gain votes. Shame on you using people like this to fit your political agenda.

  6. carlos says:

Very good leader of the PUP stand up for the poor people . The UDP is just for their cronies and not for the poor. Look at the transport situation. The close friends of the ministers are the once profiting .

  7. do it right says:

I agree with you Cleanheart. Only the people seeing Blue can’t realize what is happening. Greed for power is all these these groups are trying to achieve. Can’t believe these groups are supporting an illegal activity. Briceno should be ashamed of himself for trying to capitalize on this situation.

  8. baan-ya says:

! He seems to have forgotten that he was in government for 10 years and didn’t do anything for a lot of those people that were on the bridge yesterday. In those ten years they nothing else than to run this country in this hole that it is and now he wants to pretend that he is one of us …. neva! He has never known what is is to be poor. As for land …. he has enuff to give to everybody that was on that bridge. Shame on him.
Last week he was even at the bus owners protest in Orange Walk – I doubt he has even ridden a bus in his life. He drove to the protest in his Range Rover … talk about a slap in the face. Come on people … . Let us all deal with our issues on our own and get these pests as far away as possible. After running our country to the ground, they just bring a terrible stench to the already bad situation in our country.

  9. Higher Level says:

Cleanhear and Do it right, with names like that you would have thought that you would have dropped your partisan views and be less personal. Anyone with eyes can see that the government has acted heavy handed here.

  10. Jahkid says:

Shame on Briceno, what a Leader he would be!!! ……… I was a PUP from my 18 years to now, but last election I voted for UDP and now am considering not to vote for any party. But a mischievous mind tells me to vote again. I’m thinking into voting Briceno into power and see how he governs. But again I might regret my curiosity. The actions of the UDP in the removal of these people is very deserved. They only thing I am against is Too Much Force… Let’s go to OW and find one of Briceno big parcel and squat and see what will be his reaction. I know we would be received with open hands and even a big party under a blue tent. Think about it Belizean Brethrens.

  11. Hearts says:

Whatever Johnny is supporting isn’t a bad thing. You all look at things one side look at it in a different way the leader of the opposition do support the squatting we all no thats wrong but its the way the government took things to just destroy everything for those people we all might be living in mansion but that doesn’t mean everyone can build a mansion to live in. And regardless of alien and all the negative stuff about them they are human being just like us. They don’t deserve those treatment before destroying those people life you all could have found a place and help the people move from there to where you put them. Plus this government only talking bs bout building a bridge who are they fooling that land will remain there for century to come and nothing will start to build but they just want to bad mind those people that all and nothing fi make they sell it to some chine directly fi build up store and mansion. That tha all this government good for they sick.they don’t have pitty on the poor only the dum @$$ people like barrow no see the bad things they are doing all they see is good the government do with the corrupted police man as well. No wonder the police are dum cause they just like wheel barrow whe run pan ie head instead of walking on his foot. This government have to go sssshhhhhooo fouls no batter me.
