Barrow expects opposition to Constitutional Amendments

Dean Barrow

The Constitution and Foreign Affairs Committee now has ninety days to consult Belizeans before the eighth amendment can go back to the House for passage.  Prime Minister Barrow says that he expects some but that government is determined to proceed with the anti-crime initiatives.

Dean Barrow

“I am convinced that opposition to these measures will come only from a small but vocal minority and from some, I suppose, particular organizations. I know the bar has already started, but I think it will be principally a combination of the bar and the constitutional opposition. I run these notions certainly by the Chamber of Commerce with whom I have quarterly meeting, we had the meeting a week or so ago and they’re certainly not opposition. So I am absolutely convince, it is my unshakeable conviction, unsinkable conviction that the majority of citizens is behind these measures and I will not be deterred  by however vocal the opposition is as long as I can be persuaded or as long as I remain persuaded that it will be a minority opposition.”

We’ll have more from the House later in the newscast.
