Maranco Limited now has drilling rights over Sugar City

Cabinet met in session today in the Capital and one of the major decisions to come out of that meeting, is that a Production Sharing Agreement was awarded to a petroleum company. Maranco Limited was awarded the P.S.A. for vacant petroleum exploration blocks in the northwestern Orange Walk District.  The concession includes a section of a protected area; the Rio Bravo Conservation Management Area. While cabinet issued that P.S.A., it is known that APAMO and the Belize Coalition to Save Our Natural Heritage both presented concerns against the awarding of the P.S.A. B.N.E. and an Irish company named CARA also objected the Maranco contract. APAMO and the Coalition objected on the grounds that the protected areas are comprised of highly sensitive ecosystems which support Belize’s economic productivity, specifically for the tourism and fishing industries. The N.G.O.’s cited potential threats to the ecosystem due to traffic, hunting, illegal logging and poaching and fires. The coalition also asserted that alternatives other than oil exploration could generate economic activity in that area.

They also point out that no work plan was provided by Maranco, whose parent Company, Maranco LLC has been in the headlines recently because on the Islands of St. Kitts and Nevis, it won a suit against Belize Natural Energy’s parent company International Natural Energy. Tony Quinn, an I.N.E. director, was in breach of fiduciary responsibilities and the court on the island nation ordered Quinn to purchase Maranco’s shares in I.N.E.  The Coalition also continues its signature campaign to acquire a referendum on the issue of oil exploration.

    It’ll all end in tears:

crocodile tears from baroow & the UDP who profit from the concessions (In their Miami & Caymen Islands mansions, after leaving the country).

real tears for the rest of us living in a polluted country, with an ever increasingly corrupt government, soiled by oil money (Look at Nigeria or Bahrain), No tourism, no fishing, no forests, and nothing to offer, but drug running and human trafficking (Controlled by the GOB).

  7. BDF soldier says:

  8. louisville,ky says:

You know why the country of Belize and it’s socio/economic conditions continue to deteriorate? It’s because of the mentality of our people the likes of which are prevalent in this forum. Rather than keep cursing the dark, why not light a candle by offering positive suggestions and vigorously aggitate for succesfull follow up on those policies.
Moaning and complaining on these blogs does absolutely nothing stragetically to effect the kind of change necessary to bring about betterment for the less fortunate.
Do you believe the powers that be read these blogs? IF, they do, do you think they give a rat’s backside what are being posted?
Use your energies in a more productive manner and stop spinning your wheels with petty political mud slinging. The PUDP already know that all Belize Kruffy do, dah talk behind dehn back. It is sooo Belizean!!
By way of suggestion, why not use this opportunity to address the important issue of the PSA [ property sharing agreement] that the government is entering into with this new oil company? It is this agreement that will determine Belizeans stake in the industry and determine the benefits that will be derived therefrom. Put pettiness aside and look at the big picture. Stop listening to the noise dah di fish stall ahn chek yuh change!!

  9. Earl Grey says:

WHAT ELSE ARE THEY GOING TO SELL………………………. AND TO WHOM????????

  10. blvnjah says:

‘louisville,ky’…….WELL SAID AND THOSE HAVE BEEN MY SENTIMENTS ALL ALONG. ALL WE DO IS COMPLAIN TO EACH OTHER EVERYDAY ABOUT THE SAME THINGS OVER AND OVER
. OUR LEADERS DONT CARE AND U CAN SAY THE SAME ABOUT OUR PEOPLE. IF WE CARED WE WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT THERE WONT BE ANY CHANGE UNTIL WE CHANGE OUR MENTALITY AND COME OUT OF HIDING BEHIND THESE ANONYMOUS BLOGS AND STAND TOGETHER IN PUBLIC.

  11. Stress says:

OK LOUISVILLE KY AND BLVNJAH WANT MY IDEA ON HOW TO ESTABLISH A BIGGER AND BETTER BELIZE WITH OUR ECONOMY SEEING GROWTH ON A CONSTANT BASIS. CHECK THIS OUT: IF EVERY FAMILY IN BELIZE LEARNS HOW TO PLANT AND GROW ONLY CORN IMAGINE HOW WEALTHY BELIZE CAN GET? BROTHER LIKE A.E.C SAID WE HAVE RICH SOIL. YEA I KNOW YOU SAY “WHAT PLANT CORN?” BUT LOOK AT BRAZIL MOST OF THEIR CARS RUN ON FUEL FROM CORN. THE UNITED STATES IS GONNA HAVE A SHORTAGE OF CORN WHY DO YOU THINK BARACK OBAMA WENT TO BRAZIL LATELY? IF INSTEAD OF BANANAS AND SUGAR BEING OUR MAIN EXPORT LET’S CHANGE THE GAME AND EXPORT CORN TOO, IT’S EASY TO GROW MAINTAIN AND PRODUCE SO WHERE IS YOUR IDEA FOR MY COUNTRY’S ECONOMIC GROWTH SMART @$$….NUFF SAID.

  12. Revolution says:

@ louisville,ky: Well said. I don’t think there is much more I can add except to say that some of these posts make the writers of them appear as ignorant fools. Congrats to Maranco on the award of the PSA. As a people lets ensure that the terms of the contract will guarantee a fair share of the revenues if there is a discovery. You numb skulls at APAMO and the Coalition, start thinking of ways of how to advise the government to mitigate any potential risk once there is a discovery and stop wasting time and money deraling progress. We have oil potential, let’s develop it and feed our people. The last time I check no NGO was feeding Belizeans, not even Greg Choc who got rich and lives like a minister off the so called indigenous mayas.
