Parent says his son was beaten by the cops

A Taxi driver who earns his living in front of Save-U Plaza is fuming mad tonight. In these hard times, the cab driver was working far from his regular spot and was coming from Double Head Cabbage to Belize City when he received the news that his son, a sixteen year old minor, was in police custody. Not only was the youth being detained, when he was allowed to see him, he found out that he was badly beaten.  According to Dinsdale Zelaya, his son Anthony alleges that the cops beat him up at the Sand Hill Police Formation.

Dinsdale Zelaya, Says Son was Brutalized by Police

“Upon reaching Boom cutoff, I got a call from a friend who says police got your son and they di beat ahn up. So we roll into the station and I ask the sergeant if you have my son, Anthony Zelaya. Ih say yes just come in. So I said could I see him? Ih say sure. So I gone and look pan ahn. They beat ah up bad. He got a guava on the head, they bruk eh teeth. They wail him up on his hand—all ina his back they beat ahn up.”

Jose Sanchez

“Did they say he was resisting arrest?  Did they say what happened?”

Dinsdale Zelaya

Dinsdale Zelaya

“I didn’t even see the police that ker ahn in. all he tell me is that they beat ahn right ina the station.”

Jose Sanchez

“And they have a charge against him?”

Dinsdale Zelaya

“Well so far they di wait fi some fingerprint because they say dah some vehicle weh missing from Maxboro. I had spoken to my son and he say he knows nothing about no vehicle. I’ve spoken to the lady weh call me and ih seh they neva even know she a vehicle missing.”

Jose Sanchez

“You are waiting on a fingerprint?”

Dinsdale Zelaya

“Somebody weh suppose to do fingerprint fi come. So they say probably by four o’clock this evening they wah deal with ahn. But I guess they have to let ahn go by five because that wah be twenty-four hours.”

Jose Sanchez

“Have you ever heard of a cases using fingerprint evidence?”

Dinsdale Zelaya

“I’ve never heard ah any unless you are convicted. They say they are waiting on fingerprint—that dah weh the sarge tell me when I gone deh gone ker lunch twelve o’clock again the same thing they tell me.”

Jose Sanchez

“So how long they have your son?”

Dinsdale Zelaya

“From yesterday evening from about five.”

Jose Sanchez

“And at this point have you spoken to an attorney? How old is your son?”

Dinsdale Zelaya

“My son is only seventeen years old—ih still noh quite seventeen yet—I guess you woulda say ih sixteen and change. He’s still a minor. So I warn him, I tell him don’t answer any questions if they ask you any questions without me present.”

This is a sad story but I had to laugh haad when his old man seh dat he have wa guava pan ih head. lol.Why deh had to beat up dis lee bwoy like da wa big man weh resist arrest? Belize Police cud only do fool

The police can be & have been heavy handed at times but I don’t believe they imagined that a car was stolen. Someone must have reported their vehicle stolen & your son was identified as the culprit & that’s why they needed to match his fingerprints to the ones lifted off the stolen vehicle. If he did not steal the car, did one of his friends do it? And was he with them?

  3. MADDYVANDIJK/DEREALIST says:

I’m against police brutality especially in Belize where is no justice, and mostly corruption within the force and general system. Further this boy should be in school instead of other places that obviously got his @$$ in trouble in the first place.

This is a case of shoot first, and ask questions later scenario here. A teen picked up and brutalized by the police, without a reported missing vehicle, what nonsense.

What about all the murders and robbery, etc that required fingerprint evidence that went unsolved.
Any ways blah, blah should the evidence comes back positive then this sixteen year old deserve his @$$ whipping from the police. This beating might even help save his life in the future from becoming a plague to the society.

  4. Maria Marshall says:

A recent action I heard of has highlighted how people with cash can pay policemen to beat up and rough up others.

  5. Justice says:

What gets to me is you hear about these beatings yet when they do catch people who kill they do not beat them. Those are the person they should really beat but the police do not ever lay a hand on them, Why?

  6. Disgusted! says:

Routine police procedure in Belize. Next story!!!

  7. Chance says:

I believe the police got the right person and he deserved a good old fashion beating. I hate thieves. They broke in my house and stole over 10k worth of stuff and I’m still feeling it and it has been over a year. If I would come across the thieves or thief I would beat them and pay the police to finish beat up them r$%# too. I really hate thieves. They cause long term sacrifices for victims to recover from their losses.

After they get the fingerprints and it is confirm that it was him..they should beat up his r@$$ some more to teach him a good lesson.

  8. Elgin Martinez says:

Whenever people see $@!% like this happening if they happen to have a camera phone they need to start taking pictures of incidents of this nature so as to expose these police officers that abuse their power.

The Belize Police Force is like any other Police Department, they beat and brutalize people.Uniforms of brutality…..they beat the up the innocent and let the real criminal get away.
My brother got beat up a few years ago by a cop Aaron Zuniga.they kicked him on his chin bone and planted drugs on him….I remember….

If you never had the unfortunate experience to be picked up by the Police as a suspect and been rough up you can emagin how humiliating it is and helpless it feel to know that you are at their mercy. I speak from personal experience after been in the United States less than three months for the first time.Only if a suspected person is resisting arrest should the Police have the right to use the correct force to control the suspect. My attitude toward police is that I place them in a nutral zone, I don’t hate them, but I don’t trust them, for me they are like politicians, a necessary evil, they will lie and cheat if they can get away with it..

GOOD JOB POLICEMEN .KUDOS TO THE POLICE .EVERYTIME U SEE A TOLERANT PARENT RUN TO THE RESCUE OF THESE YOUNG CRIMINALS WHY DON’T THE FATHER TAKE HIM OUT OF JAIL PUT ANOTHER @$$ WHOPPIN ON HIM AND SEND HIM TO SCHOOL.WHEN I WAS A KID AND POLICE LASH MY BROTHER MY MOTHER TOLD GOOD THATS WHAT U GET FOR BEING ON THE STREET IDLING .SIXTEEN YEAR OLD ALMOST SEVENTEEN WANT RUN GO HIDE UNDA MOMMA SKIRT BWAY GET FROM UNDA DEH U GO SMELL LIKE CAT.

  14. corf says:

Oh yeah…another innocent kid. They slang of the century. Everyone’s kid is innocent. The way I see it if you don’t discipline your kid, someone out there sure as hell will do it for you. Gone are the days when Tablada use to !%^% them up and people take it for a joke. Now that there is the media, everyone act like its the next coming of Christ. I always tell my kids,if you put yourself in the way for a cop to whip ur @$$ then more than likely you deserved it. If you’re a law abiding citizen the police won’t beat you for no reason. These men are human beings just like us and if it takes intimidation to stay alive then i say it is survival of the fittest and carry on . We would probably do the same damn thing if we were in their shoes. These thugs in Belize are not people to take lightly. Years ago a guy was killed for a 25cents ideal. Now they kill you for no damn reason at all. I applaud the policemen because anyone that chose to be in the Belize police force must have a death wish.

  15. corf says:

@ Chance…LOL..i hate thieves too mein. I would like the opportunity to beat his @$$ too.

  16. lawAbidingCitizen says:

if the untrained and uneducated poilce in belize are in the process of chasing a suspect i would understand a beating when they catch him. but for a child to be in their custody and be awared a beating like this, falls nothign short of police brutality. By the way, i heard that more than one police beat him.

  17. lawAbidingCitizen says:

corf its abvious you have personal issues. is there any rational thinking in that thing you call your brain?
