Elderly watchman stabbed to death in Cayo

Julian Lara

Earlier we reported on the murders in the Old Capital. The crime wave spread to the west where a watchman was stabbed to death while on duty at a bar. When the body of the elderly Julian Lara was found just past midnight on Sunday, his arms and legs were tied up. The owner of the bar, who is the son of the murder victim, also owns an adjacent gas station and reports that the two suspects broke into the station and stole close to two thousand dollars. News Five’s Marion Ali reports from Cayo.

A family’s worst nightmare came to pass over the weekend in the Cayo District.  Sixty-nine year old Julian Lara went to work as a watchman for Chuc’s Gas Station and The Spot Bar, two businesses set on one plot of land on Bullet Tree Road.  The wee hours of Sunday would be the last time that the Lara family would see him alive.  In fact, Christina Fabro was his daughter-in-law, and she said saw him and the suspects when they closed shortly after midnight.

“Deh yah two young man come in when we mi done close up. Den yah two young man come in and one of them I mi know because dah somebody I live dah Santa Elena, but the business deh dah San Ignacio. The person ask me if we mi done close. I tell ahn yes we done close if ih need anything. The person seh that yes ih mi want a dollar cigarette. The person pay me with a dollar American. I gone in, I get the dollar cigarette and I give he the dollar change.   We remind him fi mek ih put the tires them weh part they belongs and so he say ok he wah put them and he just tell my husband “a dios te vendiga”. My husband tell ahn “igualmente” and we drive off. That dah mi like twelve-twenty-five.”

But, by one ten that same morning, Lara was already dead, the victim of a gruesome stabbing.  Deputy Officer Commanding the San Ignacio Police Formation, Inspector Claudio Mai, told News Five that Lara’s attackers bounded his arms and legs and left his body on the floor at the back of the bar.

“He was tied up with his hands behind his back and both feet were tied and he was in a pool of blood. So far, immediate police response led to the detention of two persons and we are looking for another individual that we believe can assist us in the investigation.”

“Our understanding is that the two suspects were seen maiign a purchase at the bar earlier that night.”

Inspector Claudio Mai

“That’s right.”

Marion Ali

“Have you discovered the murder weapon?”

Inspector Claudio Mai

“Not yet and I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to residents of San Ignacio and Santa Elena that if they come in contact with could be the murder weapon that we can be called immediately because we have combed the area but we have not been able to get it.”

The place that was broken into, the gas station, lost about seventeen hundred dollars in cash.

Angelito Popper, Manager, Chuc’s Service Station

“Upon arriving at the area we saw that the front door of the store had been broken and further checks of the area, we saw that the watchman was lying down inside of the bar.  We’re looking into getting some camera and also putting in burglar bars and shutters for the doors.”

Two suspects are in custody and police are looking for a third.  Lara, who settled in Belize from Honduras some years ago, had just taken up employment at the business.  Reporting for News Five, I am Marion Ali.
