S.J.C.’s Drug Week ends with a drug free party

St. John’s Junior College celebrated Drug Awareness Week. In a time when teens are experimenting with alcohol and drugs, the students and teachers culminated the events with a display to show that they can have fun without putting themselves at risk. News Five spoke to the school’s counselor who said that the exhibits at the Buttonwood Bay Park were designed by eighty students and teachers for a drug free party.

“What we are having today is an activity for our students at St. John’s SLA Population.  This is drug week and so we are finishing off the week with a big bang, a huge party and different student groups—we have about six here with us—and they are getting together and they are building awareness on what the effects of drugs are.  We have on marijuana, we have on cocaine, and we have Xanax.  We have a whole bunch of stuff going on and basically it’s kinda give the students and other people an idea of what they are faced with when they are excessively drinking.  We know that this is an area where young people would drink from time to time.  So it’s just kinda build awareness about what is going on in the community.”

“I understand you are also doing some fundraising?”

Kristy Chan

“Yes we are fundraising for one of our students.  Basically this student was informed that cancer is knocking at his or her door—we can’t disclose gender based on confidentiality reasons.  So what they are doing is they are fundraising trying to give as much financial help as possible over here at that stall.”
