Cops to stand trial for manslaughter

Jorge Lemus

Also in court news, two interdicted officers attached to the Ladyville Police Formation will stand trial at the Supreme Court for a shooting death in Lord’s Bank Village last year.  Thirty-three year old Corporal Jorge Lemus was charged with Manslaughter while twenty-eight year old PC Lazaro Catch was charged with Abetment for the killing Jamaican national, O’Neil Jones on February thirteenth, 2010.  Lemus and Catch were able to secure bail of five thousand dollars each after Magistrate Albert Hoare told them that there is a prima facie case against them to proceed to trial in the June session of the Supreme Court.

Defense attorneys, Darrel Bradley and Arthur Saldivar made no case submissions during the preliminary inquiry on the grounds that the prosecutor was unable to bring any evidence to substantiate the charges and are appealing the Magistrate’s decision.  Saldivar had made a no case submission since the alleged eyewitnesses for the prosecution, Lavern Stevens and Doreen Reyes, did not positively identify any of the two policemen. Bradley, in his submission, asked the court to consider that both witnesses only described them as one being slim and the other fat.  On the morning of February thirteenth, 2010, two officers showed up at Ruby’s Bar in Lord’s Bank Village where they learnt that a person giving trouble had just rode off on a bicycle. They set chase after Jones and moments later, he was shot dead.  The object that was later found near his body was a bicycle part known as a “goose neck”.

So we gave Jack Sprat & his partner who could eat no lean a $5,000 bail so that they could go back into the community & not intimidate witnesses, then claim they were not properly identified. Drag it out longer, they may develop amnesia & evidence may be misplaced & Mr. Jones committed suicide with the officer’s gun after he assaulted the cops with his”goose”.

Arthur, the dead man is the reason you are now the standard bearer for PUP in Belize Rural North, remember the grieving parents you talked about, a set of those were his. What happens when lard @$$ here shoots one of your relatives because he was pedaling too fast, running too fast or just being contemptuous? I hope you never have to find out….Every accused deserves legal representation, I would like to see our politicians become a part of the solution for a change.

Dirty cops threaten us all. Today they kill a Jamaican — will it be you tomorrow?

Cases like this must be investigated to the maximum by competent and honest officials — and if grounds exist, prosecuted to the maximum.

The respect honest police are due is diminished by every dirty cop.

Storm, it’s unlikely that there are competent & honest officials in Belize in the first place!!!

This will be another case where the case file and evidence will disappear, and the case wil be dropped. Police won’t investigate Police – end of story.

Even, if by some miracle, this gets to court, it will be classed as a justifiable homicide, and if miracles do exist, they actually get prosecuted, they’ll get a slapped wrist and “Soldier on” in the Police farce – sorry force. Heck, they may even get promoted!

  4. Meettheparents says:

well, it will fall apart simply because the fat cop didn’t shoot.
