Blush at Erotica; sensual and bold paintings from México

Erotica, an exhibition by Mexican artists, opens tonight at the Institute of Mexico in Belize City. As the name suggests, the paintings are erotic but also artistic and attempt to capture the correlation between sexuality and love. The Department of Culture of Quintana Roo had a hand in bringing the exhibition to the Institute. News Five’s Jose Sanchez reports.

Erotica, the latest exhibit at the Institute of Mexico, includes the spicy, racy and bare works of fifteen painters from the south of Quintana Roo. While local artists have barely begun to explore nudity, the Mexicans are bold in form and content.

“They belong to the Chetumal Bay of Painters and they have exhibited this collection before in Cozumel, Mexico and also at the Maya Cultural Museum in Chetumal. So tonight we are going to have the opportunity of having this exhibition; this interesting exhibition about the interpretation and the relationship between body and love and eroticism. Also they are trying to inspire young people and adults to explore in a different way, in an artistic way. We have some ideas of the human body and relationship between men and women and in this case some of the shocking images, they are trying to create in the public another way to think about this relationship.”

There are images of men depicted as horned creatures and the women as the traditional object of desire. But there are those like that of Ixtabai, the mythological temptress who kills her prey.

“In that painting we are looking at two men who are drunk. The artist is trying to express that this kind of image that drunken men have about women and about all these common ideas that men have about women. So the artist is challenging these common ideas on the men culture about relationship with women and the relationship with women and the relationship with alcohol. This is an exhibition for all the public. There are some paintings that could be a little shocking to some people, but actually what it intends is to make a reflection on the human body in an artistic and aesthetic way. That’s the reason it is presented to all the public. It’s not only about some images that show the naked human body; it intends to explore the relationship between the human body and love and sensuality. As the title of the exhibition says, Erotica. Erotica comes from Greek Eros—this is the God of Love. So the meaning is about love, the intense love and about sensuality.”

Reporting for News Five, Jose Sanchez.

Admission to tonight’s launch is free. Opening hours for regular viewing is from eight a.m. to six p.m. until April eighth.

  1. MADDYVANDIJK/DEREALIST says:

The artist failed miserably by trying so hard to transformed horror into erotic art, erotic is no longer erotic, when the images portray a woman begging for help against her drunken attackers.
Erotic never made it into these images, but pornography is highlighting the tragedy of the subject you so intended, EROTIC.

  2. Disgusted! says:

Stop wasting your breath my dear MADDY. Your concerns are genuine but they will fall on deaf ears because Belizeans are so frickin gullible. If holy joe from cocomo come and tell us he is The Christ, we would believe. Everybody take Belizeans for @$$e$ and ram all kinds of $h!t down our throats! I personslly find the “ART” distasteful!!!!!!!!
