2 grannies bring decades of experience to fight at Holy Redeemer School

Yvonne Rivero

Two grannies got into an altercation at Holy Redeemer Primary School today and both ended up in court facing charges. According to fifty-year old Yvonne Rivero, there was a dispute involving her granddaughter and the sixty year old Elodia Chun’s granddaughter. According to Rivero, she later found out that Chun’s daughter had threatened her grandchild as well as another student and went to the school to find out what happened. But instead of answers, Rivero says she was insulted and assaulted and when she retaliated she ended up in a holding cell. While she admits to pushing Chun, Rivero says she was mistreated by the police because her rival has two children in the force. She came to News Five studios today and says was treated unfairly and she’s not letting it slide.

Yvonne Rivero, Alleges Ill-treatment by Police

“A parent had gone to my granddaughter because of something that happened in class the day before. When I got to school I just wanted to know what happened; if my granddaughter was in the wrong so that I could deal with. And it ended up with verbal abuse from the lady and eventually she hit my hand and I pushed her. When I pushed her she got a cut on her hand; a small cut and she wanted to make it bigger. We went to the principal, they tried to straighten it out—all three principals were there, they tried to straighten it out but she refused.

I went to the station myself without they coming to pick me up; me and the other parent and then eventually the other person came. But then what I didn’t realize was that the person who I had the altercation with had two daughters in the police force. I found that out afterwards. And then I got locked up. They said both of us was going to be locked up; she went to the hospital, she went home and I stayed there. I asked for a phone call I was refused that. I asked for another phone call to call a lawyer and they tell me I didn’t need any lawyer, just sit down and relax myself. I said that’s not fair.

I think I am going to deal with Dickie Bradley because I don’t think this is fair what they did to me. And right now after this I am going to internal affairs because the principal already called for me so that I could talk to someone because it was not fair that I got locked up like that.  She neva get knock eena ih head or I stab ah or anything. But she is insisting that I had something sharp in my hand. All I am asking them go to the school and you will find out exactly what happened. You have two teachers that were there that separated us.”

Both women were charged with Common Assault while Rivero was additionally charged with Harm. They were released on bail and are due back in court on April twelfth.

Where are the grown ups? Three bloody generations of stupidity & no one is volunteering to be sterilized. How messed up is our society when the Grandmothers are fighting at school?. Can we stop behaving like a bunch of uncivilized idiots & giving our country a black eye?

Kids fight, they disagree & can usually work out their differences when they grow up seeing adults doing the same. No parent has the right to confront or threaten anyone’s child. Their concerns should have been addressed with the school administration if that was where the dispute began.

GRANNIES GONE WILD!!!!!!!! Seems like a bias case to me given the side of the story featured in the news. I know of several cases where people having family members in the police force use it to their advantage and the accused person is denied fair and impartial justice so I believe the story. No further comment until the other ninja granny gives her version of what happened. Two senior citizens fighting after school, reminds me of my school daze. LTFOL!!!!!!!!

I like how dis lady seh I think I am going to deal with Dickie Bradely. She done know dat Dickie Bradley da di accussed persons’ defender who seems to be an expert in helping people beat their case. lol. Dickie is so famous dat di accussed people come to he without being told where to find Mr. Bradley. Now that’s what you call “I don’t chase money. money chases me.”

  5. The Educated One says:

This is the example being set for their grandkids…smh…this is exactly why we have what we have in our society today…Shame on them.

  6. Stanley Wright says:

First and foremost you have to realize what ethnicity you are. Black people are being victimized all over the world. It might not seem like that but,it is true.I live in the U.S. for 43yrs.and it is no different here.Miss Rivero don’t let this go like that,FIGHT this injustice.

  7. Disgusted! says:

So what is the actual purpose of school administration and of security??? Imagine the scenario if these women had firearms or deadly weapons. Rage knows not limitation nor rational reasoning. Just imagine the scenario for a minute people!!!!!!!!!!!!! Partick Faber- you’ve got mail: These schools need professional counselors and people trained in conflict resolution to address future apisodes like this.

  8. Al says:

I hope this is not another case of who you know counts over what is right and proper justice for the underdog. Can we please get some fairness in Belize justice system.

  9. cg says:

and we wonder why the pickney use threatinging words…

  10. RadicalBelizean says:

What are we teaching our children here ladies? Both old enough to know better. It does seem like their was some unfairness there too if Ms Rivero account of what happened is accurate. As a punishment these two ladies should be asked to go to school and discuss how they could have handled this dispute as respectable adults. This is the role model our children are now seeing. Come on I am appalled.

  11. Elgin Martinez says:

Very good example, then we wonder why the crime rate is at it’s highest.

  12. Justice says:

It amazes me how people are quick to bring ethnicity into asomething like this. Statistics can prove what different ethnic groups are capable of so let us not go there. Then of course there are the type of individuals that go to Diclie for representation so again let us not go there. Once blood is drawn that is serious as we do not know if the person suffers with haemophilia. Ms Rivero, I see you guilty as hell! Running to the media only made you look worse.

  13. STELLA MARTINEZ says:

IT IS A SAD PLACE WHEN OUR CHILDREN ARE WATCHING US THE PARENTS INDIRECTLY TEACHING THEM OR SHOWING THEM THAT AN EYE FOR AN EYE AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH, IF WE AS PARENTS WE CAN’T DEFUSE SITUATIONS CAUSED BY OUR CHILDREN AND TEACH THEM THE PROPER WAY TO HANDLE SMALL SITUATIONS, THEN WHY ARE WE SO SHOCKED AND SURPRISED WHEN THE VIOLENCE ESCALATES TO MORE SERIOUS CRIMES? GOOD GOD GRANNIES GET A HOLD OF YOURSELVES, TEACH YOU CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN TO HUG AND NOT TO HURT ONE ANOTHER UGHHHH.

  14. spanglish says:

what a example!!! This grannies have no shame, see weh I always say about parenting???? HMMMM

  15. Good Listener says:

Have anybody stopped to think and asked the question why the problem had to be taken to the police? I believe this would never had happened if the School Principal had listened to the two seniors. In fact, Ms. Rivero did not say why the other granny had to “slap” her hand. I am sure if i was the other granny i would defend myself too. If you do not get justice at the school then the Police as the right choice. Ms. Rivero should be ashamed of taking this to national t.v. she is only embarrassing herself. School administration has to look at “BULLYING IN SCHOOLS”. Ms. Rivero is making the school look bad by going to the media.

  16. Dr. Marvin Avila says:

These Grandparents learned a lesson the hard way. They must now appear before the court to prove their cases. Maturity was obviously lacking in both of them. The discussion should have been civil with the major goal of solving their grandchildren’s problems. Adults must model the behavior that is expected of our children. Our children’s behavior is generally reflected on how we as adults act around them. We must teach our children to learn to live in peace and harmony with
each other. We teach them appropriate social skills. We encourage them to strive towards excellence in their academic performance and in all that they do. “Only the best is good enough!!!
Education is the key to success!!”
