Hans’ Bandstand in the Park

For decades the B.T.L. Park on Newtown Barracks has been the place of choice for Belize City parents to take their children on Sunday afternoons for recreation.  It has also been the venue for local fairs and the spot where Mexican rides set up shop to entertain the public.  But there was always one thing missing—a band stand to accommodate performances and speeches.  Businessman Hans Bhojwani and his wife Nandini, who have contributed to improvements at the Battlefield Park and funded the roundabouts on Princess Margaret Drive and Freetown Road, have added the B.T.L. Park to their list of municipal projects.  Attorney Wilfred Elrington challenged the City Council in his speech today, that the new pavilion at the park would be complemented with a much-desired beach.  And that is a project that City Mayor, Zenaida Moya Flowers says is in the pipeline. The projects that the Bhojwanis undertake are geared to benefit children.

“This country, all these young kids deserve better than what they are getting and whenever you see traffic jams that encourage me to do the roundabout.  Then time came when Minister Elrington and others asked me for children who really love music; they really need some place to go and sing and having fun also.  So battlefield Park we did one, this is a next one.  Soon we will be doing one in the Constitution Park at the Pound Yard, one in Belmopan and by end the year, every district will have at least one bandstand—gift from our foundation.  Our foundation’s main focus is for the education of children and this is where our focus is.”

“When we have to try and coordinate performances we have try and get stages set up and sometimes you have to try and get a top so that if it may rain or drizzle people’s equipment aren’t messed up.  And so I asked Mister Bhojwani if he would have financed a bandstand here at the park, a bigger bandstand to accommodate and to be able to encourage more activities here and he was kind enough.  This was done immediately after we inaugurated the bandstand at Battlefield Park.”

“Mister Elrington challenged the Council and yourself to let the next opening here be the opening of a beach.  How far are we away from seeing that?”

“Trust me we’re gonna work hard and make sure that we get that done.”

“The elections are upcoming very soon and he said please make it be before the elections.”

“Well definitely this is something that we want to ensure is done. And as I told you the City Planner is already doing concepts of what we can do and we do have certain individuals that we can try and go to finance the project.  Of course we certain entities that we are looking at, possibly B.N.E.  Really it’s for the residents of Belize City who for the most part may not have the resources to be able to go to the Cayes or pay for use of a private pool.  They can have access to a free beach.”

The bandstand will be kept clean and free of loiterers by B.T.L., which adopted the park a few years ago and pays for its upkeep.
