Jamelia was 1 of four children taken by Michelle Bartoli

Jamelia

While that case was about adoptions, twenty-three year old Jamelia, a Belizean victim of human trafficking, came forward on February twenty-first in the U.S. media to tell her story of how an American National took her as a slave in Fresno, California. The case quickly picked up traction, bringing attention to the issue of human trafficking. News Five has been following this story and contacted the U.S. Embassy to comment since Jamelia was only one of at least four children that were taken, allegedly by a woman named Michelle Bartoli, in 1999. The case, according to the embassy, is an active investigation and therefore it cannot comment on it specifically. We were told, however, that Jamelia has access to comprehensive victim services including health care, legal services, victim advocacy, immigration relief, education, employment placement, family reunification, and reintegration.  She remains in the U.S. on what is called a T Visa to assist law enforcement officers and after three years, she can apply for permanent residency. Jamelia’s mother told us last week that she did not sell her daughter; instead that she gave her away for a better life.

Is Michelle Bartoli this woman’s name or an alias? I am glad Jamelia is getting the help she needs & hope that she uses this opportunity to start over fresh & be the mother to her children that neither of these women were capable of being to her.

I hope that child never looks back on the mother who deserted her

  3. Belizeanyouth says:

I dont think she should abondon her biological mother, her mom clearly made a mistake but based on her frame of reference. I think she should take advantage of the opportunities provided to her, get her education, and if so wishes become an advocate forsuch cause.

I think the Mother should be charge. Make an example to others, Belize has already a bad reputation about children going missing already. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. This mother was in a bad position yes, she needed help yes, well understood but why would you send your girl child through Mexico road where alot of Belizean and other foriegners had bad experience .Jamilia was 1 of 5 children so if she was so poor why did she have more kids ? ??????? Is she really sorry for what she did or she is sorry that dark has turn to light ?
