One man protest to stop texting while driving

John Brackett

Do you like to multitask while you are driving? Well many drivers have become accustomed to talking and texting on their cell phones while trying to maneuver through traffic. One Belize City resident is tired of seeing the disastrous combination of cell phone use and driving. So John Brackett staged a one man protest near Holy Redeemer School at midday just to keep drivers on the right track.

John Brackett, Protesting for a No Cell Phone Zone

“The no phone zone is to inform drivers and riders not to use their phone, answering phone and texting in these specific areas. Some of the area I have targeted is North Front Street, Queen Street, Albert Street, Regent Street, especially in the busy hours of the morning and in the late afternoon. So I am asking the drivers if they could please cooperate with me and assist me in making this area a no phone zone. There are too many accident my brother and it is vulnerable to an accident, it is a necessity. I have been in this area for more than six or seven months every morning and I have seen all sorts of things on telephones. Drivers have their heads out of vehicle talking on phones, they are texting and I am not with it. I think it’s too dangerous and its time we do something about it. Hence the reason why I am calling as well upon the Belize City Council to act and act swiftly on this matter.”

Jose Sanchez

“This is a one man protest. Do you expect much to come of it?”

John Brackett

“Well of course because I will be protesting until we get it right.”

Now this is what I call a commendable and legitimate cause but one voice crying in the desert won’t cut it. A lot of people’s innocent children’s lives are hanging in the balance of this serious matter but no-one came out to support the guy’s sacrifice even though it will benefit all the families and kids connected with Holy Redeemer School. What a damn shame!!! Typical Belizean mentality. Backwards Ever, Forward Never!!!! God forbid, but it will take one of the children being run over by one of these inconsiderate who text and drive before anybody join the cause. Keep it up Mr. Brackett then when it happens, you can say “I told you so!”

I was very moved by this article and I believe that the GOB and the Traffic Department should put this into law. Research have shown that in the US, in 2008, 6,000 people were killed and a half-million were injured in crashes related to driver distraction! This was almost three years ago…you could imagine the statistics now! I bet that almost 80% of our population have a cell phone – the only things to do is talk and text – both which need an ability to multitask…add that to driving or riding a bicycle…bad combination! So, Mr. Brackett, I stand by you! this is the time to issue a NO PHONE ZONE in our traffic laws!!!

Belize needs to up it’s laws some are: Every person must have an identification card at all times, Tinted windows and windshields should be light dark and visibility must be ensured etc. Maybe i should run for Prime Minister of Belize…..

I strongly support this move more than offshore drilling. Texting and driving at the same time is very dangerous not only in the city but any other place like the highways, towns and villages.

We need and SI to enforce this.

  6. Bz says:

It is bad enough people are on their phones, (Me being guilty of it at times) Texting while driving is just ridiculous. A headset attachment is the best way to utilize your phone when driving. Makes you look a bit on the crazy side talking to yourself but it beats hurting yourself or someone on the street.

  7. Goose says:

Kudos for this man! I think this is a great plan! By now, I would have expected that the Belize City Council would have already implemented a law that banned all drivers from using the cell phone while driving. Especially in the school zone areas. What’s up with Belize man? This man’s intent is to promote safety. We could be saving a life, or maybe even or own if we stop using the cell phone. Sending a text message while driving is just as dangerous as a drunk driver!
In the U.S., over 30 states have implemented the cell phone and texting laws. Most people aren’t happy with the laws but who cares. It’s for their own safety! Personally, it irritates me to see people driving and text messaging. People don’t realze it but it’s a deadly distraction!!! Texting and driving is a perfect example of something that negatively impacts another person. You may only be looking at your cellphone for a split second, but that’s all it takes to plow into a pedestrian or bicyclist that’s crossing a crosswalk, killing them, decimating their family, and changing your own life forever.
Now all there is left, if for the Transportation Dept to take action to this plead!!

  8. cg says:

so true, i’m guilty of that, we should all stop messing with our phones while driving. I commend him on that and will start to abide by it

  9. RG Belizean says:

Great job Mr. Brackett! When driving you need to pay attention to everything and everyone around you. Also the traffic department really need to enforce the wearing of seat belts. When I was home last year driving around with a friend of mine…He didn’t wear his seat belt while driving in the city only when driving on the highway…which i think is ridiculous because DRIVING IS DRIVING…It doesn’t matter if you’re in the city or on the highway!

  10. Storm says:

One more vote here to make it ILLEGAL to text while driving. AND, SUSPEND THE DRIVER’S LICENCE FOR A YEAR FOR THE VIOLATION.

  11. BZNinCALI says:

Disgusted, I hope you are wrong & we don’t have to lose a child or children before we pay attention. Texting while driving is outlawed in most states if not all & when caught, with the other infraction thrown in, it can cost us a pretty penny here in Cali. Mr. Brackett, this is a good start, your children & the children at Holy Redeemer are blessed to have you..

  12. 2 cents says:

I was Texting and walking and this man on bicycle had to shout at me to move out his way.i agree Texting while driving is ridiculous draw up a petition and i will be the first to sign

  13. Mustard Stand says:

I agree with this man, texting and driving is dangerous, I even saw i texting as he was riding his motorcycle and he about crashed into the bus.

  14. Elgin Martinez says:

I am in agreement with John Brackett.

  15. awrk says:

we see this everywhere. While you wait in line to pay, the cashier texting, everywhere. a few months ago it happen to me at Belize Healthcare Partners . The male cashier was texting while customers waiting. This really made me upset. he tried hiding his phone so the customers would not see he was texting, but i still notice. Where i work nobody except supervisors have cell phones with them, because to many times employees were found texting while customers wait. Peolpe who text at work screw themselves , same should go for drivers, if found texting, suspend the license. Phones while driving should only be allowed if using ear piece
