2 senior Belize Tourism Board managers fired

Two weeks ago, Santiago Castillo Jr. along with Stanley Longsworth Jr. were both dumped from the executive of the Belize Tourism Board.  Castillo’s firing as vice chairman was sensational because he is a U.D.P.  strongman and financier and the Longsworth family is also aligned with the party. Well tonight, there is word that two senior managers at the B.T.B. have also been given their walking papers.  Shakira Oxley-Tsai, who has been with the Board for the past seventeen years, received her letter this afternoon with no reason given for her dismissal. You would recall that Oxley-Tsai was promoted to the post of Acting Director of Tourism during the interim following the departure of former B.T.B. director Tracey Panton.  On Tuesday, Lloyd Enriquez was also fired from his post as Registrar of Hotels.  Enriquez’s seat was still warm when Kevin Gonzalez, took over the office. Gonzalez was on consultant contract with the B.T.B. and was the Director of Tourism during the U.D.P.’s previous term in office from 1993-1998. Like Castillo and Longsworth, the dismissal of Oxley-Tsai and Enriquez was not designed to inspire confidence in the industry, nor was their performance under question, instead it appears to be a matter of their loyalty to the B.T.B. Panton included, a total of five top execs have been released from the B.T.B. Also of note is that recently a scam was busted that involved the sale of tour guide licenses. For that another person was fired.

I think it is time to clean up all the mess in Belize. The tourism industry hasn’t been performing well over the past years indicating that changes have to happen. Using the Belize bank for example we can see that top Executives where removed because the institution wasn’t performing the way it supposed to. I guess all the non performing institutions in Belize need to be revamped and given fresh minds to be able to compete locally and internationally.

  2. 100% Belizean says:

The Minister is the one who should be fired. Tourism is suffering under the UDP, the BTB under this Minister seems to have no plan, no direction. The UDP way !

  3. rod says:

  4. EMS says:

This appears to be quite a conundrum???????

  5. KRTDIAZ says:

IT IS INDEED A SAD DAY IN TOURISM. A CLUELESS POLITICIAN WITH HIS EQUALLY CLUELESS CRONY WILL LEAD THE ONE THING THAT CAN SAVE THIS COUNTRY INTO AN ABYSS. I AM SO PISSED WITH THE PM FOR JUST STANDING BY WHILE THE FOOL PLAYS GOD WITH THE MINISTRY AND THE STAKEHOLDERS ARE TOO TIRED AND FRUSTRATED TO RESPOND. MAY GOD REALLY BLESS US WITH THIS SET AT THE HELM…..AND BY THE WAY..I AM A U.D.P. SO I HAVE NO AXE TO GRIND. I PUT COUNTRY FIRST IN INSTANCES SUCH AS THESE.

  6. Lindsay Howard says:

Enriquez was one of the most reasonable and competent officials in the Ministry of Tourism. I can’t imagine why he would be fired. This whole scenario is incredible. What in the heck is going on in the MInistry of Tourism? Is Lindsay Garbutt engineering all this? Seleni Matus? Both? Heredia can’t be doing this on his own.

  7. rucelli says:

IF ITS NOT A MEMBER OF HIS FAMILY, A COUSIN OR NEPHEW, UNCLE OR ONE OF HIS EX-WIVES, OR SON.. THEY ARE NOT TRUST WORTHY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY NOT WORTHY OF RECEIVING A SALARY..

THIS IS A BARROW AND FAMILY ADMINISTRATION ….

HELL GET THEM OUT BEFORE THE COUNTRY FALLS LOWER THAT WHERE IT IS AT THE MOMENT.

Nobody should stay in a managerial position at the BTB for seventeen years. You get tunnel vision after just a few years. Tourism is under-performing because people are in their positions for too long and they stop growing and imagining, everything becomes rote. It’s good to put in fresh blood every now and then to reinvigorate things. It’s especially good if the fresh blood comes from private sector tourism. I think it’s a good move.

  9. MyLegacyB4myPeople says:

That is the way we play it, when there is emphasis on something big like the Mexican that had a speedy trial who jumped bail in the North after being arrested with twenty Thousand US dollars and an illegal fire arm. We don’t want magistrate Clive Lino to be removed from his post he does a good job in getting us money to fuel our wealth building legacy scheme so we know if we create another issue to have people talk about they will soon enough forget about Magistrate Lino and things will return to normal so a BTB issue would certainly work it always does. Remember, My Legacy B 4 My People.

  10. Oscar965 says:

Everyone at the BTB seem to want the top positions. BTB priority is not to promote tourism. It may have been in the past but the actions from BTB these days do not say that. I hear more news stories of position changes than projects to better tourism arrivals in Belize. Thankfully individual business continue to promote themselves or else..we would have no tourist in Belize. Most of them are highly overpaid and they do “nothing” except arrange “press conferences” where they socialize with thier little cirlce, eat super expensive food and spend thousands of dollars of our tourism tax money….sad..indeed..and the few that work hard get fired…Mr. Heredia wants to do good..i am sure of that but he has a crew of totally incompetent people around him…from Seleni Matus..going down the line..and that is so sad….

  11. DeMichellis says:

Tourism will soon become the second industry earner just behind drug trafficking in Belize, do we really trust Mr. Heredia as tourism minister, what are his qualifications? other than he was born in a tourism island and was a fisherman… have you guys heard his way of expressing on television using pre-school language, is this the image has to offer internationally? what a mess… lets think future, lets bring tourism back up!

  12. Elgin Martinez says:

Bs like this will continue to happen in the jewel reason is that nothing in the jewel can be done without bringing politics into the equation. This just shows that the politicians are all about themselves and family members. This bs need to stop. Our system needs a serious overhaul.I am looking forward for the day when we as Belizeans are going to be hired for our knowledge and not as a result of our political affiliations of family ties.

  13. Gbwoi says:

I totally agree, Mr. Enriquez was one of the most valuable player in the tourism industry…..Its a shame they are playing with our livelihood for their benifits.

  14. Disgusted! says:

I was reliably informed by a friend of one one of the persons who was fired that the firings were imminent to facilitate hand-picked .D.P. cronies. And this is a fact based on inside information!

  15. ivan says:

I agree there’s too much NEPOTISM’ in the UDP government, they only think fi grab and grab and leave Belizeans with nothing,we need to put our life jackets because this ship is already sinking.

  16. The People Had Enough says:

I think MyLegacyB4myPeople has a valid point. I know politics, i study it, i read about it and this tactic is simply misdirection, politics in general is all about misdirection. The masses fall for this tactic every time. BTB is useless and minister of tourism in useless and this is all about the udp cronies wealth building and power placement.

  17. CEO says:

They can fire all the current staff and hire more tomorrow and nothing will change until the crime business get better under control! Question is how the heck will this happen because those that swore to protect us and defent the law are the perpitrators of crimes in Belize: big crimes!

It is and will become harder and harder to sell Belize to tourists! Tourist dollars is small change anyway, let’s try to get some manufacturing jobs in Belize. This is where the real money is. Tourist dollars is hand to mouth!

  18. Justice says:

    I agree with Rucilli:

IF ITS NOT A MEMBER OF HIS FAMILY, A COUSIN OR NEPHEW, UNCLE OR ONE OF HIS EX-WIVES, OR SON.. THEY ARE NOT TRUST WORTHY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY NOT WORTHY OF RECEIVING A SALARY..

THIS IS A BARROW AND FAMILY ADMINISTRATION

I cannot understand why my fellow Belizeans are accepting this crap. I will take the initiative and advise other bodies if what is happenning. The gangs should shoot who deserve to be shot!

  19. carlos says:

I am totally disappointed with my government.
We voted them to fix thing not to make them worst. You fire to put u d p cronies in position? I am surprise about this. Your cronies might not have the experience to do the job. Come on Mr. prime minister do something if the people at the head of the tourism ministry can do the job fire them. Put some one competent to do the job. Its getting too late for your government to do the right thing.

  20. anonymous says:

Garbutt, Matus, Heredia and Barrow…all experiencing declension of the brain!

  21. BLVNJAH says:

I RESPECT EVERYONES OPINION AND AGREE ON HOW INCOMPETENT AND EVIL THIS ADMINISTRATION IS, BUT UNTIL WE STOP ‘TALKING’ AND START ‘ACTING’. THE POLITICIANS WILL KEEP ‘GIVING IT TO US’(AND NOT IN A GOOD WAY)

  22. anonymous says:

well wat can i say…it was expected to happen sometime and it finally did! only one more person is left in that building who is a hardcore PUP and im still surprised she is still working there. the BTB is solely corrupted in so many ways. instead of working on how to better the industry, they are working on who can replace this one and that one. the ex director of btb has left but she is still yet near working for a sister company of btb. and the new director…honestly wat is her role other than travelling back and forth every week or two weeks to where she lives wich is in the US. and of course travelling on btb’s financial aid. well the good side about that..she actually rides coach and not first class to my surprise. then again they save a lot just by having her go on coach. and the new chairman of the board…my oh my wat a beautiful 4runner he drives. from the looks of that red ride…it must be a 2011 model. that is wat i dont get instead of using the money wisely they spend it on themselves in buying lavish cars. wen will the corruption and waste stop!!

  23. Earl Grey says:

Tourism IS ONLY GRAVY…………. We need to produce more meat and rice and corn & veggies 2.

WE NEED TO GROW MORE FOOD……..BELIZE CAN GROW JUST ABOUT ANYTHING.

GROW MORE FOOD FOR EXPORT……………. AND LET TOURISM BE EXTRAS……………braata.

  24. Anony says:

The tourism industry is the #1 earner for the country and So many things have been occurring within the industry..these firings are the last thing the industry needs. GARBUTT, & MATUS are the ones who should be fired. I am totally surprised at the Minister…he obviously doesn’t have a mind of his own. Rather he listens to what Matus & Garbutt has to say…instead of making his own call. Castillo, Longsworth, Enriquez, Tsai are all key ppl within the industry. Castillo & Longsworth & Enriquez are exceptional personnel within this industry. But once again the UDP has bashed one of their own! People or families who has supported them for years!!!!! This has definitely become their M-O! Minister Heredia, Garbutt (who is such a densed individual), and Matus…need fi pack deh stuff and leave the Tourism Ministry!!

  25. Concerned Citizen says:

Justice for Lloyd Enriquez! I’d put my head on a block to say he’s the most honest person there!

  26. Belizean Intelligence says:

Dedication and hard work were what Mrs. Tsai and Mr. Enriquez represented . They were performers they were the ones that implemented many of the systems that makes the tourism industry what it is today. As previously mentioned in the blog about no one should be in a position for 17 years is and idiot. a person with some many years are more than dedicated and have a wealth of knowledge and experience to indulge in the field. They are beyond imaginative they are a work of art. I am disappointed in deed with our government… because they proved exactly what they are into . …. This is no Longer ” Be one with Belize.” This is be one with Seleni, Garbutt, and Heredia…. ” it sad that they are on their own campaign will at the same time simply just ripping the industry ….
