Belizean American gets US $400,000 for wrongful imprisonment

rennison castillo

A Belizean, who moved to the US, became a citizen and served in the army, was wrongfully imprisoned for seven months. While that’s time he won’t get back, Rennison Castillo’s lawsuit won him four hundred thousand US dollars. Fox News Latino reports today that Castillo, who was living in Washington State, had been locked up and was facing deportation because officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) did not believe that he was a naturalized citizen. Castillo explained that he became a citizen back in 1998 during his seven years of service in the US army and asked the officers to go to his car, where his military card was kept. But no one would listen or believe him. Northwest Immigrant Rights Project and Seattle attorneys took up his case and Castillo was finally released. The court granted him the hefty settlement and the government gave him a letter of apology written by the assistant U.S. attorney in Tacoma.

  3. Bruce says:

Americans go around the globe PREACHING HUMAN RITES and DEMOCRACY!!!!!
They cannot run their own country with the the above in mind. Perhaps the time has come to start practicing what they PREACH!!!!!!

  4. BT says:

that should work out to about $1 for every new “family” member this guy will discover he now has!

  5. lorianna says:

Hey Bruce~ SOME Americans … SOME!! And if you think your government is bad .. take a deeper look at USA’s .. cause ours is totally “f’d”

  6. John Boy,Carson,Ca says:

Hey Bruce, America is not perfect, but no one is above the law in America. At the end of the day there is justice. You can not say the same thing for Belize.

  7. analyst says:

  8. Stanley Wright says:

Listen to me.John Boy is talking through the side of his neck because,Karl Rove that was George Bush’s hench man should be in jail and,he is out still brainwashing people for republican party.America is just a little bit different from Belize in that respect.

Bruce, not only was Mr. Castillo not deported, he was paid $400,000.00 & got a letter of apology. When was the last time our Government even pretended to give a damn about the “Poor” or apologized for screwing them. We did not leave Belize in droves because of all that civil rights we had, we left for better opportunities in the states. This man can now pay cash for a home, start a business or do just about anything with that money & I guarantee you if he tells the same idiots who mistreated him that he wants a job, they will gladly hire him.

America is imperfect, when we see stories like these & only accept the part we want to believe or are exposed to what the rest of the world describes as the “Ugly American” like god jr., scott the GM at Radisson Ft George, we lose sight of some of the good people who make up most of the American society. I am not sure why Mr. Castillo was detained in the first place but hope his time in jail did not make him bitter & he uses this windfall wisely. Empathize with all those friends & relatives in need, shake the open palms placed before him , give them a hug & a sadder story than the one they give him & send them on their way or he’ll be broke in no time.

  11. CEO says:

Just before you start beating up on the Belizean system which I must add needs much revision but many have died by execution and encarcerated wrongfully in America also!

The American system is as flawed as the Belizean system even though they are at it much longer than we have. Money and influence buy justice in America just the way it does in any other part of the world.

  12. EMS says:

America is still # one, no matter what. the best system, justice for all.

  13. John Boy,Carson,Ca says:

I rather be black and poor in America, than to be black and poor any where in the world.I am a black poor man in America living in a 500.000 house, driving a new car,and living my American dream.Only in America you would have a story with a happy ending like Mr Castillo.

  14. BZNinCALI says:

Stanley Wright, Karl Rove converted no one, he is preaching to the choir.

  15. Bruce says:

Basically with all the technology that we all pay for for our security every time we fly could they NOT have checked out this guys story he wanted to go to his car and get his information. TO ME it appears that common sense was not used at all.

  16. Elgin Martinez says:

Honestley $400,000 for wrongful imprisonment isn’t alot for someone who swore to defend the constitution of a country. There are thugs in the US who receive millions of dollars for wrongful imprisonment.

  17. Inglebert says:

That $#!% is too little the car wash makes that $#!@ in half day

  18. Crazy says:

Well $400K is more than a coke and a smile. Mistakes happen and unfortunately he paid the price.

  19. The People Had Enough says:

  20. Facetious Plebbe says:

    @BZNinCali
We don’t know if he got paid the $$$ yet. Just like here, the government there has no money, so don’t be surprised if he is waiting for a while to get his.
