Cruise Ship Tourist visited by robber

Koos Klybroek

A group of cruise visitors who were out sightseeing in downtown Belize City today fell victim to one of the crooks that plague the streets of the old capital. Just after eleven a.m. fifty-five year old Dutch National Koos Klybroek was along with his wife, Esther Van Eeden and three friends when he was suddenly ambushed. A brazen robber approached on bicycle and snatched a camera from Koo’s hand as they passed the NICH building on Southern Foreshore. It’s a highly trafficked area, just a stone’s throw away from the Magistrates Court, which was heavily laden with police officers and BDF soldiers. But when the group shouted for help, the officer who responded was unable to catch the culprit. According to Koos, his Nikon brand camera, is worth one thousand, two hundred and fifty US dollars. The group arrived this morning on the Carnival Glory; it was their first trip to Belize and after today’s incident, the visitors say it might also be their last.

Until the criminals have something to fear, everyone else will live in fear. People expect good service & may not compliment you when you do your job. Mess up once & they tell everyone who will listen. We have to get the crime in check or become that beautiful place that can only be appreciated from afar.

Ok see this is the type of crime that cripples a nation! Here’s a group of tourists sightseeing and trying to get to know our country, instead they got to know our thugs and thieves! Its a bloody shame what Belize has turned into over the last five years. Crime is staggeringly high and we have said the same thing over n over again … once tourism starts getting affected by these thugs, the entire country is in for an uncertain future in terms of revenue.

If I were that tourist I too would label Bze a bad place to visit! Let’s face it, no one anticipates to be robbed especially in broad daylight in a high trafficked area! If you’re not safe in public, then you’re not safe anywhere. I SIMPLY WOULD NOT GO BACK TO BZE…AND IM A NATIVE OF BELIZE! That should ring a bell!!!

am sure if that tief was caught and shot on the scene, there would be a crowd of mother and sisters on TV idolizing the creature about how he was an angel who neva did anything wrong in his life….thats one of the biggest probs we face and an encouragement for thieves and criminals. and, in my opinion, i think they shud be shot on the scene rather than caught and taken to court…cause in our justice system, they just go da back fu get lee fat and then cum out again to ‘rob in peace”

The police need a lot of HELP. I believe the police are not able the protect the people of Belize. Look at this the crime happened in front of them and the still can’t get the guy, cause all the police do after the are done for the training school is to get fat. But we really cant blame the police totally cause we as a people need to help to reduce crime. I know that some one was close enough to knock the guy off the bike and stop him. People of belize stop sitting by and seeing the crime happening in-front of our faces and do noting about it. We along with the police have to work together to stop crime as it happens.

Accountability people, there are 3 tourism police or cops in front of that building at all times, where were they. they should all be fired. and the one who catches the theif given a 5000 dollars reward . somebody needs to be held accountable if we continue business as usual and just complain nothing will change.

Lets not condone covetousness on all Aspect of life not only on Local criminal
levels, because they are thieves in low and high places. So lets run those political thieves
outta office who the rob the people them, then we wont have these type petty crimes in
    our societies. YHWH

here too is an incompetant tourism department.. i bet they shrugged their shoulders and blamed the police and went on their merry way.. if the tourism department had half a brain, which i can testify they dont as our tourism is no work of their doing but, hard resort owners spending thousands of advertising dollars .. with their less then half of brain they should of got off their lazy arses and went and reimbursed this guy, made a scene about how we dont let this happen and even if they had to get some media there at the visitors center shown Belize standing up for the tourist and giving them $1500 or whatever would of made the guy happy… fifteen years in toursim in Belize i will tell you the tourism board never got one person in my hotel.. and i learned that if a person had a great time in a place they may tell a couple people but, if they had a bad time they will try to tell the world..

  9. Magnet for thieves says:

Downtown Belize is a magnet for thieves. After all the broad daylight armed robberies, hold up, shootings, theft, etc, that happened on our main streets, I still can’t believe that there are still no cameras to monitor that very small area, where millions of dollars’ worth of money transaction occurs on a daily basis.

wow, great first impression. Nuff said.

  11. Mr. B says:

Our pathetic justice system and out of control crime will KILL the tourism business which will end foreign investments and will cripple our economy. BELIZE …WAKE UP!!!!!

I finally got to see a picture of a bus in Belize with a big sign telling Carnival to Really Nice, you dumb bastards.

This picture is being sent around on the internet and now no one wants to go to Belize. There are blogs about people who will boycott Belize. I guess it is true when they call Belize a “Banana country”…it is so backwards.

    Mr. BECA

I feel sorry for poor Belize, her situation is shamefull and pathetic; gets worse everyday both for residents and tourists. I don’t know how they even promote the city as a tourist destination knowing the crime situation.
