The Opposition People’s United Party held a contested convention over the past weekend up north. Close to one thousand four hundred voters cast their ballot in the three-man race in the Corozal Southwest convention to replace the outgoing standard bearer, Doctor Gregorio Garcia. A veteran in the area, Garcia won as area representative in 1993 and 1998 but lost the two consecutive general elections. When the ballots were counted, Ramiro Ramirez topped the polling with eight hundred thirty one votes to become the new standard bearer.

The two other contenders Juan Eck got three hundred seventy-six votes while Amilcar Moralez got one hundred and seventy nine votes. Of note is that last week Wednesday, Carolyn Trench Sandiford, one of the deputy party leaders of the P.U.P., was returned as standard bearer for the Collet Division. She is the first woman so far to place her name on the ballot for the upcoming general elections from both political parties.
