Near fatal stabbing in Old Capital

There was a near fatal stabbing on Thursday night in the Old Capital in the same area where journalist, Joseph Budna was robbed last week.  Fifty-seven year old Rene Garbutt, a security officer employed by Fort Point Security, was on duty when he was attacked and robbed. Tonight he is in critical condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. At a little after midnight Garbutt, who was stationed at a garage belonging to C.B.C. in the Southern Foreshore area, was attacked by a man who proceeded to stab him multiple times to the body. Garbutt was also robbed of his service weapon as well as his communications radio which was later found near a drain on Rectory Lane.  Garbutt received severe cut wounds to his face, right hand and left wrist but so far a police investigation is yet to turn up a suspect.  News Five spoke with a resident of the area who was awakened by the commotion.

Voice of: Eyewitness

“This happened just about midnight last night.  I was watching [the television] and I just turned it off and at the same moment I heard loud voices but it was, the voices were incoherent.  I couldn’t clearly distinguish word for word and every dog in the neighborhood [was] barking.  Everyone around here has at least as minimum four dogs in the yard and I, then afterwards I saw the activity and the loud voices and the activity of police vehicles around so I called one of the neighbors and I asked him what happened?  He responded that there was a stabbing.  So I said who got stabbed [and] he said one of the security guards from the neighborhood and I said okay I’m on my way and I hung up and came around to see.

I cannot, I couldn’t distinguish what firm the security guard [belongs to] but I know it’s definitely not K.B.H. because I called K.B.H. later to find out how the gentleman was doing and I was told that it wasn’t from their firm.  But I understand from one of the neighbors that he survived the stabbing.  He must have lost, from what we saw, the pool of blood we saw last night he must have lost more than a pint of blood because the blood was on the ground very thick and gelatinous.  It was awful to look at. It’s a bit perturbing, more than perturbing, very unnerving that such incidents happen so very often and most of us here  rely on dogs because we’re not all going to spend money on security guards.”

“From what I understand this has been the second incident [in this neighborhood] within the span of a week.  The first was Joseph Budna’s vehicle on Saturday night?”

Voice of: Eyewitness

“Yes, this is the second incident we’ve had since a week.  Last week there was a carjacking and that had at least, I would say, some thirty to thirty-five policemen teeming around the neighborhood.  This was the robbery of Mr. Budna’s vehicle on Albert Street and most of the police ended up around here combing every neighborhood.  In fact we believe that maybe this is a repercussion or an act of revenge because the security guard that was stabbed last night happened to see one of the thieves on the rooftop of one of the houses around here that has a very flat rooftop.”

The stabbing of Garbutt is the second incident to occur within a week in that vicinity.  On January twenty-ninth Joseph Budna was carjacked as he was offering a ride to two individuals on Albert Street.  During the robbery Budna managed to jump out of the moving vehicle which was immediately pursued by an unmarked police vehicle as well as a B.D.F. patrol team.  Several shots were fired when the robbers were trapped inside Budna’s maroon Mitsubishi Diamante.

It seems that the security people lack training in identifying possible criminals, at any time especially late at night a guy with a knife should never be able to approach someone on watch who is armed with a gun to inflict any damage. These security guards needs to wake up and always be on alert and keep a distance between them and possible criminals. An attack of this nature should never occur; in fact the guy with the knife should be the one recovering in the KHMH or being prep for Lords Ridge…

Obviously there are surveillance cameras in the area, they can find this animal. How many more hardworking men & women have to die before we reinstate the death penalty & put in that express line so that we can take these beasts out of our misery?.

I am sure if the security guard shot this guy he would be the one in the hot seat now..this country is for the criminals not the honest hard working people.
There is no doubt the police already know who this repeat criminal is. Trickie Dickie is just waiting for the phone call for his next easy case… keep getting the criminals out Dickie one day they wont be your friends either..

OOOOKAYYYYY, I am a security guard…a guy approaches me with a knife and i get stab up and he stole my gun? Now that is too damn funny. Are these security guard trained…at all? I was partying in Belize City one night, went to a gas station to buy some more drinks and me and a friend walked into the gas station and the security guard was watching t.v., it was only the clerks that watched us cautiously as we walked in, not that we look like criminals or anything (we were dressed nice), however with the state Belize City is in, it would have been wise for that security to be steering us from a corner, observing our body language and his hand ready for his service weapon, clip unlocked from his gun holster; no matter how someone look, you slip and you end up in hospital or lose your life.
