Belizean Joel Evans wins Emmy for editing

Two time Emmy Award winner; that’s an impressive achievement to boast in the entertainment world. And as of January thirtieth, Belizean Joel Evans has those bragging rights.  The Emmy is one of the most prestigious awards in international television production and is on par with the Grammy, Tony and Academy awards. Evans sat on the Open Your Eyes couch recently and spoke about how he won the 2009 award for his work on a music video. Well now, he has claimed the 2010 award for his editing skills. His was one of six nominated videos that were judged on how well the editors put the pieces together while telling a story within a short time. We spoke to him via phone today about the winning video.

Via Phone: Joel Evans, Emmy Award Winner

Joel Evans

“I submitted for editing and what that meant was I basically created a demo reel showcasing my editing skills. So I made a video specific for the submission. And how these things work is that you can submit a video for whatever category you’re submitting for but it has to be within a specific time that they set. So it had to be within one year of the submitting date. What I did was I went and I got projects that I had worked on throughout that time I put it together and made only a minute long video. I edited the stuff together real fast, real hype, high impact, high action and that’s what I submitted for editing.

This was my first time submitting for this category. The last Emmy that I won last year was a team effort where we all played a music video and my part in that was the lead editor. While I won an Emmy, I didn’t necessarily win an Emmy for editing, I simply won an Emmy because the music video that I was a part of won. This time around it was all specific about editing so everything that was in that project that I submitted would be scrutinized based on my skill when it came to editing.

One of the reasons I was kinda disappointed I couldn’t be up on the stage to say some words because that’s exactly what I would have said; to all the crew in Belize watching and listening, this really is for young guys to show that Belizeans have as much of a chance as anyone else to do something like this. It’s not where you were born or anything like that. It’s just a matter of setting goals for yourself and doing the due diligence to get there.”

Evans is currently employed with the US National Guard, directing and editing high impact ads for the military.

Just a point of clarification, there are multiple levels of “Emmys” awarded… from the big ones for Prime Time TV, all the way down to regional awards for local news, and even student productions. They all share the name “Emmy” but they don’t share the same level of prestige.

Not to take anything away from Joel’s accomplishment, but not all “Emmys” are on par with the Oscars, Tonys, or Grammys. Joel’s a very talented filmmaker and he certainly deserves praise for his work. To win an Emmy, at any level, is something to be very proud about.
