NTUCB and P.M.; problem resolved?

Last week, the prime minister started a firestorm with the National Trade Union Congress of Belize when he called his party’s radio station and made disparaging remarks against trade union representative Lorelei Westby for not supporting a fifty million dollars investment by the Social Security Board in BTL Shares. Earlier today a “cordial and respectful” meeting was held with the NTUCB, according to a release from the Prime Minister’s Office. The release says that Barrow spoke on the matter with union representatives at great length sparing no detail on what the government is intending to achieve.

  1. Cayo Buay says:

    conflict of interest -
    1. Situation that has the potential to undermine the impartiality of a person because of the possibility of a clash between the person’s self-interest and professional-interest or public-interest.

    2. Situation where a …party’s responsibility to a second-party limits its ability to discharge its responsibility to a third-party.

    3. Any situation in which strong relationships can develop may trigger a conflict of interest. Conflict of interest can be personal, religious, political, academic, financial, and legal. It is not determined by area, but is created by relationships that involve a high level of personal commitment to, involvement with, or dependence upon a person, subject, idea, tradition, or organization.

So in a nutshell, conflict of interest is not bound to only self interest and personal gain but rather anything that will cause one to be caught in the middle of a deal where you have an obligation to both sides as is the case with Mr. Vasquez.

Conflict of interest also comes in when family members and interested parties start getting involved in the workings of deals.

Example: If a city councilman awards a lucrative contract to a company owned by his brother. It would not be illegal to award such a contract to the best qualified company, even if that company were indeed owned by a relative, but the councilman himself could not be part of the decision making process. There would be an obvious conflict of interest, because the councilman’s own family would benefit financially from his position of power.

Speak to the people on the board to vote NO on this deal…

The PM is turning me into a PUP. He is like a spoil child that throws away the toy if he has to share. He is the damn leader of our country. So as soon as someone disagrees with him he starts blasting them on the radio? (Sucking my teeth n shaking my head) what a leader! Arrogant as hell…

  3. Global Perspective says:

Edith: There’s always three sides to a story and from your previous comments you have made I am pretty surprise at this one. I hope closer to the election people really will pay close attention to all whats going on and then make an informed decision. You see the PUP machine is working overtime. What I will `say is that Mr Barrow’ doesn’t make things easy for himself with some of his decisions. Its about time that we have a third party and there are a few people on this site that would be potential candidates from all walks of life yet have the intellectual ability to take on the crooks.

I agree n maybe I shouldn’t have said turning me into a PUP. Its just, we r reading n seeing what is being put out there n our PM is not informing the people at all. He’s calling in to his own station to blast the people against him while he’s not addressing the real problems. I am letting my emotions get the best of me n I shouldn’t. Thanks for pulling me back Global :-)
