Accountability and Transparency not forthcoming from Gov’t chairman

deborah sewell

The government appointed members on the BNE Charity Trust Board are Landy Burns as chairman and Alberto August and Ismael Requeña as representatives. BNE’s appointed members are Kevin Herrera, Daniel Gutierrez and Noemi Escalante.  Deborah Seawell points out that the current Chairman is following the guidelines of party politics rather than the established criteria to help needy institutions.  Sewell believes that since she didn’t want to back Burns’ personal agenda in Orange Walk, she immediately became expendable.

Deborah Sewell, Former General Manager, BNE Trust

“The GOB appointees are very much into funding projects in specific areas and so there have been conversations at the table in reference to who are receiving the funds and are they supportive of the UDP party are they supportive of the PUP party. There were several projects that came to the board for discussion and they were comments like no we can’t fund that project even though it’s a community based project not affiliated with any area rep., but the conversation is that person is trying to undermine the minister in that division. Things like that which we have never; the previous board had never looked at that as an issue. We looked at that based on our criteria: has to be community based, has to have a sustainability aspect, has to have partnership, so that’s been completely thrown out the window and it’s strictly being looked at on who is supportive of what party and that’s really how the determinations are being made.

We’ve distributed over four thousand school desks to over forty-two schools. And one of those containers was sent to Orange Walk to be distributed. We can only account for a hundred and twenty-five of the desks of the three hundred and fifty-eight desks. The rest of the country, we asked them to contribute three dollars for each desks, which are metal desks, brand new desks. We looked at the donated depreciated value and based on that there was a three dollar contribution for each desk. Now the rest of the country contributed three dollars and the schools in Orange Walk contributed five dollars. And that was something that Mister Burns was responsible for allocating. As I said, he has only accounted for one hundred and twenty-five of the desks and we don’t know where the other two hundred and thirty-three desks went. Those are issues that we really have to look at because when we talk about distributing things equally and evenly among everybody and anybody can apply, it doesn’t goes to specific individuals. We’re very big on accountability and that is something that we’ve been asking him since June to provide the documentation for the remainder two hundred and thirty-three desks and we have not received that as yet.”

Jose Sanchez

“Are you of the opinion that the chairman wanted you gone because you were asking him to be transparent?”

Deborah Sewell

“Definitely. We know that he has made commitments. He has tried in the past couple weeks to ask me to push his agenda.  I refused to do that because I do believe in what the Trust was set up to do. This is not something that government asked B.N.E. to do. B.N.E. wanted to ensure that some of these monies from the oil revenues would go back directly into the communities.”

    PARTY POLITRICKS…………..again.

WILL WE EVER GET BEYOND THIS “STUMBLING BLOCK”???????

  5. zoe says:

Landy Burns is offering himself for a UDP representative in one of the divisions of Orange Walk Town!! That alone should be a criteria that disqualifies him for position in BNE. CONFLICT OF INTEREST!!! Now arrogant Barrow can use, even his narrowed horse point view and defintion of that phrase, and recognize that having Landy Burns in BNE will have him use funds to fulfill his agenda in O.W. Everyone in O. W. T. you ask about him can tell you, he only cares for himself!! ANOTHER corrupt individual doing the next logical step in the CORRUPTION COURSE, which is RUN FOR POLITRICKS!!!

  6. wow says:

In Landy(‘s ability to push his ego and agenda over charity and nation) we trust. Now I see. I wondered where Landy had gotten so much dirt bins to put around the Louisiana (Orange Walk East) neighborhood. BNE money, our money? Pure propaganda, one the people of the OW East no longer believe in.
We need REAL leaders to move this country foward not people like this…How can the people TRUST in someone so CORRUPT…wake UP Belize…are these the kind of people we want to lead our country!!!

  7. Bzn_123 says:

Sr. Landy has shown once more that personal propaganda is more important that doing things right for an area. Landy wants to run in OW East. The East is tired of lack of representation, but will definitely not tolerate corrupt representation. Maintaining an economy in shambles, leading to nothing good but greater poverty and despair. Tryin 2 keep us poor so later on wanting to buy us out with money, our own money? Isn’t this the same Landy who was said to have sold to our government a small bus stop for over $150,000 some time last year? $150,000, you know how much mouths that could feed? Using our own tax money to campaign, to deceive. Wrong UDP, wrong! We simply cannot Trust in no Landy.

A trust fund can logically not be handled by political interests or individuals aspiring for political agendas. We have heard nothing wrong about Ms. Sewell, she has done a great job in managing the Charitable Trust so please do the correct thing and renew her contract. Do what is logically right.
