Alleged serial rapist beats another charge

leroy gomez

Leroy Gomez was dubbed the serial rapist when he was accused in a number of rapes and attempted rapes that go back to September 2008. The twenty-four year old has been tried for three of the offences and in two cases the charges were withdrawn. Gomez’ only conviction was on August eighth for Rape, Robbery and Aggravated Assault and he was sentenced to a total of twenty-three years in prison. But today Gomez successfully appealed that conviction without the help of an attorney. He argued that police released his picture, which was aired in the media even before he took part in an identification parade and that affected his case. The Justices of the Appeals Court agreed that the trial judge, Herbert Lord, should have dealt with that matter in Gomez’s trial so the conviction was quashed and sentences were aside. No retrial was ordered because the panel of judges felt that it is not fair for the appellant to face another trial due to the error by judge Lord. The conviction was for raping a twenty-two year old woman at knifepoint and forcing her eighteen year old friend to watch.

you cant be innocent by being charged for the same crime 3 times even if you beat the case because of the law messing up because of their incompetence. This dude got it comming soon and it wont be nice, what goes around comes around.

  2. Earl Grey says:

    JUSTICE WILL NOT BE DENIED!!!!!

  3. Creole says:

you have to be sh*****n me. Does law enforcement not follow protocols. Even a convict without a lawyer, can get off. Thats why criminals dont even think twice now, they now that they are likely to walk free.

  4. Francisco Patt says:

It is so sad. 6 females came forward and reported that this man raped them. One had the courage to confront this man at court and testify. On of the witnesses died and the others got cold feet. To make matters worse this man was on parole when he raped this women. The court of appeal quashed the conviction so as soon as Gomez finishes his time he will be realeased to rape again. He cannot change, he is a serial rapist. The people who testified on court agianst this man knew him and believe me the female who was raped knew who raped her so the media did not need to remind the girl who raped her. It is a bunch of technicalities that messes up our cases and court systems. Well all I could say everyone in Belize knows who Leroy Gomez is so beware when he gets released.

Seriously? What needs to be done to get these guys out of the public and away from harming others. Is there seriously no evidence to deal with this fool. Is the police force and the medical field so antiquated that they cannot provide medical and other evidences to link these ……… to the crime they commit?

  6. Proud says:

Francisco, I think its the other way around. Leroy Gomez knows he better watch out when he is released. Remember that these females have relatives and each one of them must have at least one relative with …….

  7. Con says:

  8. finia says:

  9. conerned Belizean says:

I hope this effing c@#$…#*r gets what is coming to him!!!!!!!
Mein the GOB really need to start giving some scholarships for capable students to go study Forensics abroad. What about DNA and sperm in the victim? What about Photos of the victim and Statements from the witness? What about handprints etc????/?? God, does the GOB even care about stopping crime?
And we also need some NEW damn LAWYERS
All Dean Barrow cares about is winning Said Musa in a VERBAL BATTLE in House Meetings!?!?!??! RIDICULOUS!!!! Let’s MAKE and Effort and try to reduce CRIME in Belize.
Next thing is….prisoners get treated like Royalty in jail. Good food to time. They need to SUFFER in there so they don’t want to go back and well for those that should be in there for life…they need to PAY for the crime they committed! We need a WHOLE set of new ppl to take over the running of this country! people who actually care and who are actually in it to do good!

i told u, only in belize u get away with anything,-even murder.

  11. Earl Grey says:

BUILD A PRISON FARM DOWN IN TOLEDO……………..

That’s where we can send him, if “the Streets” don’t take care of him first.

At the PRISON FARM, they can grow produce to feed themselves and some of society.
Now WE HAVE TO FEED THEM………I CAN’T AFFORD IT…… CAN YOU???????

  12. L.C. says:

Earl Grey, you may be on to something there. If I recall correctly, it is tax money that feeds prisoners. (Please correct me if I’m wrong about that, especially since the prison is supposedly private…. I’m not sure). If this is true, hard working Belizeans are the ones footing the bill to keep prisoners eating, bathed, clothed, etc. Having them actually doing some sort of labor to feed themselves is actually a good idea.

What does a picture has to do with this case. if he is the suspect law enforcement has all authority to aired their suspect. it just one picture made this inbecil got away. i think the court of appeal needs to look closer at this case he is a criminal and he needs to pay the price eye for eye. He will go back and do the same thing again and if he does the court of appeal needs to be blame for their mistake. they need put this criminal back in prison not later but now he is free listen he will do the same thing again.

  14. Leo K says:

d justice system doesn’t give a …. about the safety and justice for Belizeans……..they protect d criminals rather than protect d innocent.

  15. living good in the usa says:

common sense we need people with good moral value not some idiot in the court system.

  16. Disappointed says:

I won’t say that the justice system failed us, but they weren’t given the right tools to work with. That is, our government fail in providing a forensic lab etc. Most of our crimes can be simply solve through forensic, but do any government that has been in power invest in such a lab. Take a good look, most of our leaders are attorneys, went they are out of power, they go back to their law firms etc, defending these criminals.

Now I’m not saying that he shouldn’t do time for his crime, but the man is absolutely right. You have to run him through a process first before you convict him, and ONLY THEN can you put that picture up.

Example: A female gets raped in the dark. She can’t see very well. On the news, they run a picture of a male that has the same build of the ‘figure’ she saw in the dark. Now, that image is seared in her brain. No matter what you try to tell her, she already has it set in her mind that THIS is the person that raped her. It could be that the person the police picked up was just passing by when her incident happened. (and the police probably abused the man :D )

Its like trying to convince an atheist that there is a God. You can’t. He has already made up his mind.

  19. BZNinCALI says:

LC, his story was never police brutality. He could not have been the rapist because he had a mother. Duh! In the 70′s David Gabb raped & attempted to rape several women including one who whipped his behind. We had no TV, we had newspapers & word of mouth &we all knew who he was.

Our population is small, most people are traceable & I do not understand why DPP did not counter his challenge with the fact that it is common practice for pictures to appear in the media & he was a suspect in the first place because his victims described him accurately. Since there was no issue with trans-racial identification, there is no reason to believe that the media coverage made a difference, these women did not see the news anyway. Lie like a damn rug, beat him at his own game.

To whomever commented on a Primary School dropout outsmarting our legal minds. Until we choose the staff based on qualifications & not connections, the criminals will continue to eat our lunch.

Did the victim who did not testify die as a result of this man’s weapon if choice?

Sisters, you knew he’d be back with that stupid smile on his face, the court just gave you permission to shoot his worthless a$$ on sight.
