K.H.M.H. has a quince años

The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital has come under constant fire in the last year for allegations ranging from negligence to questionable purchases, mismanagement and a myriad of other wrongs. Recently, it was the dengue related deaths that brought sharp criticism to the hospital. But the K.H.M.H. is the national referral hospital and this week, it will turn fifteen. A host of activities are being planned to shift its battered image to a more positive one. News Five’s Delahnie Bain reports.

The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital opened its doors on September fifteenth, 1995.  As it celebrates its fifteenth anniversary this year, the K.H.M.H. is hosting a week of activities, which was launched on Monday. Today the hospital hosted high school students in an Open Day.

Sheena Garnett, Public Relations Officer, K.H.M.H.

“The purpose of the Open Day was to have the fourth formers from the different high schools—the Belize District High Schools—just to come in and get an actual glimpse of the units and have the units display and give information on what it is they actually do. We have the maternity ward, we have our operating theatre, we have the intensive care unit and each unit has a special purpose. So the display and the information is specialized only to that unit.”

Among the schools who took the tour today, were students aspiring to have careers in the medical field and they told us it was a learning experience that will come in handy in the future.

Phaedra Mohammed-Ali, 4th Form Student, Wesley College

“I found the tour quite interesting because we learned that when we come to the hospital to get treatment, there is a lot of behind the scenes stuff that occurs. It’s not only to get better and come out, there’s a lot of other work that happens.”

“What are some of the things that you found interesting?”

Phaedra Mohammed-Ali

“I found that they have gauzes that they use in the surgery that if they leave in there they have this blue lining inside that can be detected by the x-ray just in case it’s left in there. I thought that was quite interesting.”

Carlos Leslie, 4th Form Student, Wesley College

“It was very interesting. I love the way they treated us. It was kind of nice and stuff like that.”

“The equipments, the laboratory, things they do that we don’t know; behind the scenes.”

Sheena Garnett, the Public Relations Officer at the K.H.M.H. outlines the events scheduled for the rest of the week.

“Today is the open house, tomorrow is our health fair and it’s going to be right in the parking lot here. On Thursday we’re having our staff appreciation day where our staff gets to dress down in jeans and we’re treating them because we really do appreciate our staff. On Friday, we’re having an outreach. That’s basically an open clinic, where we walk in—it’s going to be at the Lions Den. We’re going to have our ENT, which is an Ears, Nose and Throat Specialist, we’re going to have our cardiologist and we’re going to have our ophthalmologist.”

The week of activities is intended to highlight the hospital’s growth and expansion of services over the past fifteen years. Delahnie Bain for News Five.

Wednesday’s health fair runs from nine a.m. until two in the afternoon.

Happy quince anos KHMH and a great “thank you” to all the staff.

Such a wonderful nostalgic feeling to hear something happy happening in the old hometown.
It’s a shame that all the good work done at the KHMH is not always publicised.
