Mata Chica Resort employee died from drowning

The post mortem results of fifty-seven year old Gregorio Cornejo reveal that he died from drowning. Cornejo has been employed at Mata Chica Resort on San Pedro Ambergris Caye for the last ten years. On Monday night, the staff of the resort held a staff party to celebrate the end of the tourist season which coincides with the seasonal closure of the resort.  According to employees of Mata Chica, while on the resort’s pier, Oscar Barela allegedly punched Cornejo and he fell in the water.  Cornejo had not learned to swim and ingested water and was said to be inebriated. He was still alive when he was fished from the sea and was reportedly regurgitating water on the pier. He was rushed four miles away to San Pedro town where he was pronounced dead on arrival.  Barela has been detained but not yet charged.

    Punching someone for any reason other than defending himself deserves a charge & conviction but I’m not holding my breath. The excuse that Mr. Cornejo could not swim does not change the fact that if this young man less than half his age did not punch him, he would not have ended up in the sea. Alcohol consumption is not justification for murder.

    This family should file a wrongful death suit against Mata Chica. Even if the deceased was not assaulted by MC’s owners or their reps, they were on MC ground, attending an official MC event. He was still officially on their time and their responsibility. As a previous poster said, they should have performed basic CPR on the man. Had this been a guest, would they not have done the same? It’s just hard to believe that the deceased worked at MC for a decade and no one there knew that he could not swim. Some interest they take in their employees.

    I think da bout time we get wa reel forensic pathologist. This guy always goes with the easiest and less controversial cause of death. rememba the premature baby and all the cases that are in an advance state of decomposition and therefore the cause of death is unknown. this is the best thing for the police because then there is no case

    @Blind Eye Jamesie
    That is the BEST comment I have seen so far, and it has been nagging the back of my mind – this is exactly the truth. That is the same forensic pathologist who once said that a young man who died in one of the lagoons of San Pedrito died of “Crocodile Syndrome”. uh, say what???
