Marques Johnson, the Former NBA player and current Head Coach for the National Basketball team met with potential players last night.  This afternoon at four thirty, more basketball players arrived at the Belize City Center to take part in one of the practices that will determine the final team roster. The Belize Basketball Federation is still hoping to add two six-feet-ten players, Leon Sunny Watson and Noel Felix.  News Five spoke to coach Johnson about his first impressions of the local boys.

“It’s going ok, we had a chance to see them a little bit last night. Come back, had a lot of guys that were new from last night. It’s about teaching them about what we want out of the drills. We’ve seen some pretty decent talent; some guys out here that I think may have a chance to play on the National Team.”

Jose Sanchez

“Richie, you have some experience with the team, today is your first practice, what is it like looking forward to Dominica?”

Richard Troyer, potential player for National Basketball Team

“I don’t know, we had one yesterday actually, today wasn’t the first one; but I like what we’re doing. It’s really organized and the practices are running really well. I think it’s the right start definitely.”

Jose Sanchez

“But what about when it comes to your expectations of your own performance?”

Richard Troyer

“I just do my best every time and I’ve been working hard for this one. I lost some weight. I’m in better shape than last year. So, hopefully I can play well.”

Jose Sanchez

“Looking forward to Dominica, there’s a lot of tall guys there, vertically challenged players seems to be an issue here right now.”

Marques Johnson, Head Coach, National Basketball Team

“Yeah it is what it is; Kareem Abdul Jabbar is not walking through those doors any time soon. And none of these guys are gonna grow five inches over the next week. So, whatever we have to work with, we’ll work with. But we’ve got some players that have got a lot of international experience, some guys even though they’re not that tall they play a little bit bigger than their size. And then as coaches we’ll have to come up with some type of game plan that will offset our game disadvantage. You got out there and you play the game with what you’ve got, that’s all we can do.”

The 2010 Centro Basket games take place in July in the Dominican Republic.

If you want a winning team you have to pick a winning team by selecting players that fit the bill, height is as important as speed in basketball. Not everyone is fit enough to play basket ball, and if you have to make a cut to get a win team, do it.

With $100,000.00+ they should be able to put a decent team together. I wish other athletes get such support. Track stars who come home with medals still have to beg for pennies.
