Gun amnesty wraps up

A two-day gun amnesty program spearheaded by the Belize Association of Evangelical Churches was an ambitious undertaking by a faith-based organization to move owners of unlicensed or illegal firearms to redeem their weapons for clothing and footwear.  While the exercise coincided with Operation Jaguar its results have not been as stellar. Of the three locations where guns and bullets could have been turned in the collective effort yielded one point thirty-eight revolver and twenty-two rounds of live ammunition.  The program which ended a short while ago was a joint effort between the churches and the police department.  According to Pastor Eugene Crawford majority of what was traded in were fake weapons.  The public is reminded that possession of an unlicensed or prohibited firearm is an indictable offence.
