Ryan Horne is guilty of murder of Esquivel sisters

Story PictureHe said he had to kill them and now the verdict is in for thirty-four year old Ryan Horne. Horne was accused of brutally stabbing to death two sisters, Rosa and Sandra Esquivel. The trial took place in the court of Justice Adolph Lucas and a jury of seven men and five women deliberated for about three hours today before it found thirty year old Horne not guilty of the murders. The jury, however, found Horne guilty of the alternative charges of two counts of Murder by Reason of Insanity. Justice Lucas then remanded Horne to Central prison at the court’s pleasure which means he did not get the mandatory sentence of life for murder.

On May twenty-second 2006, on Euphrates Avenue, Horne stabbed eighteen year old Sandra twelve times and he also stabbed seventeen year old Rosa forty-nine times and left the murder weapon, a knife, embedded in her genital area. Dr. Mario Estradabran, testified that some of the wounds to Rosa’s thighs were inflicted after her death. Police Corporal Mark August testified when took Horne to the police station and asked Horne his name, Horne said “From mi heart I mek wah mistake. Dehn gial disrespect me, di Spanish gial always disrespect me. Ah had to murder her.”

The Crown Counsel was represented by Nadine Palacio. The defense, represented by Bernard “B Q” Pitts and Alifa Elrington, called three witnesses. Two witnesses testified to seeing Horne walk naked on Belize City Streets and Dr. Claudia Cayetano, testified that Horne was not in touch with reality and that he acted and did things because he was delusional. In his own defense, Horne said he couldn’t recall what happened.
