Westerhaven offered bail of $6.5 million

Story PictureIn last night’s newscast we reported that the cargo ship, Westerhaven that ran aground on the reef on January thirteenth, was still under arrest at Anchorage. But it seems that the ship might soon be free since the court has offered bail. Chief Justice Abdulai Conteh ruled that the ship can be released if its owners provide six point five million dollars as security, or if a bank or insurance company would sign a guarantee for that same amount. Michael Young, attorney for the owner of the Westerhaven, told News Five that his client has denied liability and while there are no discussions to settle out of court at this time, that option has not been ruled out. Since the ship’s captain Fritz Shroeder and the owner’s representative have both left the country, the cargo ship is now under the command of a new captain, Arie Bijl.
