Policeman shot by Guatemalan bandits

Story PictureNo arrests have been made in the Ladyville home invasion, and heading west, a police officer was injured allegedly by a group of Guatemalan bandits. The officer has been admitted to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital following the shooting that occurred in the Calla Creek Area of the Cayo District. This latest incident in that area took place around seven p.m. when Private Constable Donald Pinelo and two other officers were on patrol in a private mobile. Six armed men accosted the three Belizeans and fired shots at them. Pinelo was the only one injured; he was hit on the right shoulder. He was rushed to the San Ignacio Hospital for treatment and later transferred to the K.H.M.H. Deputy Officer in Charge of San Ignacio Police, Inspector Dinsdale Thompson, says that the bandits are believed to be from neighbouring Guatemala.

Inspector Dinsdale Thompson, Deputy O.C., San Ignacio Police
“Sometime around seven p.m., Benque Viejo police mobile was out doing some routine patrol in the Calla Creek area where they were ambushed by six masked men. What happened the reports were saying that the police were in their vehicle when six masked men came out two to the front, two to the back and one on each side of the vehicle and held them up. Shortly after, they released or allowed the police vehicle to pass by and while the police vehicle was passing by two shots were fired by the mask men, one of which hit P.C. Donald Pinelo in the right shoulder. His condition is being described by the doctor as stable in the hospital in Belize City.”

Duane Moody
“It’s possible that the bandits are from Guatemala?”

Insp. Dinsdale Thompson
“Yes that’s what we suspect strongly.”

The Guatemalan authorities have been contacted and officers from the districts and the B.D.F. have been called in to increase patrols in the area that has been prone to incursions from Guatemala.
