School expansions planned

More classrooms and expanded programs for other schools were among the topics discussed at this week’s Cabinet meeting in Belmopan on Tuesday. The Ministry of Education reported that ten classrooms will be built for Belize Continuation School. Plans are also being made to refurbish classrooms at the Youth Enhancement Academy in Ladyville to transform it into a Vocational Technical School. Funding from the Caribbean Development Bank has been earmarked for the construction of two new high schools and four centers for employment training. An eight week summer program for pre-school students will be carried out in 30 rural communities in July and August and the Pan American Health Organization is developing a school feeding program. The Ministry of Local Government is looking to develop the seaside village of Sarteneja in the Corozal District into a tourist destination and residential community. A four-member task force representing the Ministries of Local Government, Agriculture, Natural Resources and Tourism will look at the issue. The Ministry of Labour presented a report on the current status of trade unions and the legislation on their management and the promotion of collective bargaining.
