Red Cross takes disaster preparedness to the villages

Story Picture
In the aftermath of Hurricanes Georges which affected several Caribbean countries and Mitch which touched down closer to home, the Belize Red Cross and U.N.D.P. have organized a series of Community Disaster Preparedness workshops. In May and June, twenty-seven villages were targeted in the Corozal District. Today, Crooked Tree Village was the first of twenty-four villages in the Belize District to participate. Audrey Courtenay, Director of the Belize Red Cross, says public reaction has been very positive and she hopes the information learned will prove useful in the future.

“We don’t believe that we are taking anything new to people in the rural areas. They have been accustomed to survival and they are very creative. However, there are certain things that if they are aware of, and we will not take it for granted. We want to be sure that they can take these precautions and practice these measures, we feel the impact will be much, much less.”

The next workshop will be held in Bermudian Landing on Thursday.
