George McKenzie, goes to the Supreme Court

Story Picture
He might be on the streets today, but tomorrow George “Junie Balls” McKenzie will be in court yet again. McKenzie and Eugene Neal have appealed Magistrate Herbert Lord’s sentence of four years for possession of a prohibited firearm and six months for unlicensed ammunition. They are currently out on bail. According to the lawyer for the defendants, Lutchman Sooknandan, their appeal is based on four grounds, which includes the position that the decision about the possession charge was based on the wrong point of law. McKenzie and Neal were arrested last October when the taxi they were riding in was searched and police found a sub machine gun and ammunition. Both men maintained throughout the trial that they had no knowledge of the gun or the ammo found in the car. The trial was sensational, since it was the first time attorney Simeon Sampson had prosecuted a case in 25 years and because proceedings were interrupted in January when Neal attempted suicide in his home.
