Cuban nurses arrive in Belize

Story Picture
While emergency workers were simulating a plane crash in Ladyville, a real aircraft was landing at the nearby Philip Goldson International Airport. Aboard were 42 health professionals from Cuba. Included in the contingent were 6 doctors who were joined for the first time by 36 nurses. The nurses, most of whom are highly trained specialists, will assist the nation’s health care system to cope with a nursing shortage until additional Belizeans can complete their training over the next several years. 22 of the Cubans will be posted at the KHMH and eye clinic, 6 will go to Orange Walk, 6 to Dangriga and 1 each to Corozal and San Ignacio. According to the Ministry of Health the Cuban nurses will work closely with their local counterparts. 20 more are due to come over in May and an equal number will arrive in June.
