Cops and robbers shoot it out in Cayo

An early morning shootout between police and 2 suspected robbers has left the suspects hospitalized. The drama unfolded near the San Ignacio Town hospital around 3:00 Sunday morning. The police were searching the area for two men who had just committed a hold up. As the police entered Hospital Street, they saw their suspects and observed one of the men holding a sawed off shotgun. The police ordered the man to drop the weapon but instead of obeying, the man opened fire on the police. That was not a very good idea as the police fired back, hitting both suspects in their left side. The men were taken to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where they remain in a stable but serious condition. According to Cayo police, they were responding to a report made by 24-year old Mathias Gonzalez and 23-year old Jose Luis Pinelo, who told them that two men, armed with a sawed off shot gun, held them up and stole their watches, 2 rings, a pair of tennis shoes and $60 in cash. Police have recovered all the money, 1 ring, the tennis shoes and the weapon. However, Police Press Officer, Christy Castillo says because no charges as yet have been levied against the men, who remain under police guard at the KHMH, they are not releasing their names at this time.
