Commuters keep licence pending investigation

On yesterday’s newscast we reported on a group of commuters from Corozal and Orange Walk protesting the cancellation of their charter permit. Today the Department of Transport has decided to allow the daily charter to Belize City to continue pending investigations. The bus, which belongs to Froylan Gilharry, was detained by Corozal police and traffic officers around 5:00 a.m. Thursday, on grounds that he was violating regulations by picking up paying passengers, and not just the ones the charter governed. According to Transport Commissioner Glenn Arthurs, charters are used to conduct special jobs such as tours and trips, and only buses with regular permits are allowed to pick up paying customers on scheduled routes throughout the country. The Department of Transport says it will have an officer periodically monitoring the chartered runs to Belize City to ensure that there are no further violations.
