Still No Charges for Alleged Murderer Alexander Ruiz

The sensational story of the killing of Luis Cabrera Junior and the chilling accident that followed involving his alleged killer and another man sent shockwaves across the Punta Gorda community. The alleged killer Alexander Ruiz fled on a motorbike with William Garcia and was injured in the accident on the road to San Antonio Village shortly after the murder; Garcia died. After Ruiz was released from hospital, he was charged with the manslaughter of his friend. It’s been over a week, but he has still not been charged for Cabrera’s murder on the night of February thirteenth.  When the fatal stabbing happened, there were witnesses inside Dahanny’s Bar who allege that Ruiz carried out the crime. Cabrera’s family is not happy that the alleged killer has been released on bail for a manslaughter charge.  Today, we asked police what is causing the delay.

Joseph Myvett

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“No. The investigation still continues, though. He was charged for Garcia’s death.”

Andrea Polanco

“Sir, what exactly is this hold up with charging him or holding him for that particular murder considering he is or may be the number one suspect for that murder?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Yes. That is the case; however, the investigators have to establish certain procedures which they are doing.”

Andrea Polanco

“Sir, are there any concerns that Ruiz may leave the country since he is out on bail? Was his passport withheld?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“I am not sure of the conditions of the bail but yes the matter is still under investigation.”

Andrea Polanco

“Are you confident that charges will be brought against this man?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Well, we are not saying that. It depends on the outcome of the investigation.”

Andrea Polanco

“So, despite the fact that there are witnesses – still nothing that the police can do to hold him?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“There are witnesses but certain testimonies need to be reduced in writing. Yes, there are witnesses but that does not mean that the investigation would have to take its course before that can happen.”
