Marijuana Field Destroyed in Corozal

The Belize Defence Force carried out a destruction of marijuana fields in northern Belize over the weekend.  The B.D.F. carried out an operation in the early hours of Saturday near Little Belize in Corozal and found a weed plantation with three thousand marijuana plants. No one was found in the area and the trees were uprooted and destroyed. ACP Joseph Myvett tells us more.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“Members of the Belize Defence Force reported that on Saturday the ninth of March, sometime in the early morning, they conducted a marijuana eradication operation somewhere in the Little Belize area of Corozal District. There they discovered a marijuana plantation containing four thousand five hundred plants ranging from three to four feet in height, as well as thirty pounds of marijuana. No one was found in the area; as a result the trees were uprooted and destroyed.”

“Initial reports had said that someone was arrested and they were a relative of a senior police officer. Was any such report information received by the department?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“No. None. As far as we know, no one was arrested and it was a BDF led operation. There were no police officers on that operation.”

Reporter

“But I understand that the police officers came immediately after the BDF had initiated the destruction?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“I verified that today and was told that the police officers were not a part of any operation.”

“This area of Little Belize, I know it has been area of plane landings before. I have seen an airstrip carved out in that area and the BDF exploded it. But do you all know who the operators in there are; who are involved with narcotics; either the production of it or other aspects of the narcotics trade?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“No. What I can say though is that the police also conduct frequent operations in that area so this is not the first time that marijuana has been eradicated in that area.”
