What Happens if Belize Votes NO?

So what happens if there is a NO vote? Well according to Assad Shoman, there is no clear plan as to what steps will be taken. Shoman says he cannot predict what will happen, prompting backlash from Attorney Audrey Matura and Former Border Commissioner Lindsay Belisle.

Assad Shoman, Citizens for the Defence of Sovereignty

“If we vote no then nothing is certain. There is nothing like that. No agenda. No nothing. It just means that we have not ended the claim. It just means that we have allowed Guatemalan to escape from the corner which we have succeeded in putting them now. If we agree that they go to court then they will forever lose the claim. They don’t have a territory. They have a claim, that imaginary claim. That bogus claim. They will lose the right to say that they have claim but if we vote no they will continue saying that they have a claim. What will happen? No one can predict.”

Audrey Matura, Attorney

“It’s disappointing to hear that if the people vote no then we don’t have anything. It then seems that the government presupposed that everyone will vote yes and that is bad. I like to think ahead and if they are so sure they got this then it means that you all will not get your registration card back immediately to go vote because I can’t see how they can be so sure that they got this.”

Lindsay Belisle, Former Border Commissioner

“If you vote no then you stop this runaway train because it is obvious that we are not prepared. You could see that from the public education campaign that is going on. We are going to the courts without correct information. We will be embarrassed. So we need to get our act together before we go to the court. They don’t have a plan if we lose. But the funny thing is that Guatemala already has a plan if we lose. They say that those in the area that the ICJ will give them could turn Guatemalans.”

Assad Shoman

“Can I just ask, Lindsay can you honestly say to the people here that you believe that there is a chance Guatemala will be given a piece of Belizean territory? Yes or no?”

Lindsay Belisle

“I don’t know.”
Assad Shoman

“Yes or no?”

Lindsay Belisle

“I don’t know.”

Assad Shoman

“Can you say with confidence that we can lose something at the I.C.J.? Yes or no?”

Lindsay Belisle

“If you could say with confidence that we will not lose then I will say…”

Assad Shoman

“What?”

Lindsay Belisle

“…that the court will rule.”
