Police Awaiting Post-Mortem to Determine Charges for the Death of Senior Citizen

A post-mortem conducted today on eighty-seven-year-old Gudelia Estevez lists the particulars of death as sudden non-cardiac death with acute pulmonary edema with saddle pulmonary embolism. But the death certificate also lists displaced fractures of the leg, as well as blunt force injuries as a result of being hit by a motor vehicle. The eighty-seven-year-old great-grandmother was knocked down with her eight-year-old grandson two weeks ago in Belize City. She died early on Wednesday morning. Her family reports that she never recovered and became bedridden since the accident. Today Inspector Wilfredo Ferrufino told the media that they are awaiting the results of that post-mortem to determine how they will proceed with charges for the driver Martin Franklin Reyes.

“Ms. Estevez passed away yesterday and we know that the driver had been served with a notice of intended prosecution. The investigation is ongoing. Now that Ms Estevez has passed away, the investigation has taken another turn. What the investigator had briefed me is that they will now await the results of the postmortem and they will forward the file to the D.P.P. for her to make her conclusion on what charges to take.”

“So, you all believe that you will be levying charges against the driver?”

Insp. Wilfredo Ferrufino

“Well, there was initially, there would have been charges, however, there may be additional charges now depending on the outcome of the postmortem and whatever the D.P.P. directs.”
