A Man Seated on the Edge of the Southern Highway is Ran Over and Killed

Joseph Myvett

A fatal road traffic accident claimed the life of a man who was ran over on the Southern Highway in the early hours of Sunday morning.  Alvin Abad Paz was reportedly sitting on the edge of the road just outside of San Juan Village when a motorist knocked him down.  Bad enough that Paz would choose such a location to rest, but according to Lorenzo Mejia, he was momentarily dazzled by the bright lights from an oncoming vehicle.  That’s when he ran into Paz whose bicycle was next to him on the side of the highway.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“On yesterday’s date sometime around 2:30 a.m., Independence police were called to an area between miles thirty-six and thirty-seven on the Southern Highway where they observed a male person motionless on the highway and beside him was a bicycle extensively damaged.  According to police, one Lorenzo Mejia was traveling from San Juan Village towards Dangriga Town and whilst between miles thirty-six and thirty-seven he was temporarily blinded by the lights of an oncoming vehicle and eventually ran over the deceased and his bicycle and the deceased was later learned to be Alvin Abad Paz, other particulars are unknown at this point in time.  What the police gathered also is that Mr. Paz seemingly was sitting on the road, as they learned this information from persons who had passed the area before.  Mejia was detained whilst the investigation was ongoing and he was later released after he was served with a notice of intended prosecution whilst the investigation continues.”
