Is P.U.P.’s ‘NO’ Position Causing Division?

John Briceño

Mobilizing tens of thousands of voters on April tenth is a task which will require resources such as human capital and most importantly, money. Prior to the P.U.P.’s National Party Council meeting on Saturday, reports surfaced that Party Leader John Briceño had communicated to the party’s hierarchy that they will need to fund their ‘no to the I.C.J.’ campaign. So is there a rift within the P.U.P.? Briceño was asked about it.

John Briceño, P.U.P. Leader

“We’ll I think that is an internal matter for the party to discuss.”

Reporter

“And you’ll leave it at that?”

John Briceño

“I’ll leave it at that.”

Reporter
“But going out and talking to the people still as part of campaign requires funding, correct?”

John Briceño

“What’s the big deal about that?”

Reporter

“Any money will be put into that campaign or not?”

John Briceño

“I will repeat one more time, this is an internal matter and wherever we can help we have always help in every single election.”

Hipolito Novelo

“Including financially?”

John Briceño

“Including financially.  Money alone does not win an election. It is about getting the people worked up and getting them energized about whatever position that the party is taking. Wherever I went in all thirty-one constituency, people are telling you that ‘we don’t know enough’, ‘we don’t trust what the government is doing’, and ‘we believe that we are not going to be ready for the tenth of April and because since the government being stubborn and don’t wanting to change the date, we are going to vote no’. So that in itself is already a reason why we believe that people are going to come out. If we have to find ways to make it easier for people to come out and vote, of course we will do that, of course we will find ways. We have a lot of people who own vehicles who would make their vehicles available. But like I said, money itself does not win an election; it is the hearts of the people that you need to win to win an election.  As a responsible leader, I have always worked to try to ensure that we could have everything that we need to carry out the wishes of the people of this party. In this case the people of the party they want a no vote so as a responsible leader I need to listen to them and I am going to work with everybody to ensure that we could have whatever resources that is necessary to be able to get a no vote.”

Reporter

“Will you work with the Belize Peace Movement, other grassroots organizations?”

John Briceño

“Well they will work with us, if they wish. If they wish.”
