Chester Williams is Installed as Thirteenth Commissioner of Police

With twenty-seven years of service under his belt, Chester Williams today was installed as the new Commissioner of Police.  Williams has also distinguished himself as the first attorney to take command of the Police Department.  The passing of the baton to Williams took place at the Police Academy in Belmopan. He takes command of a department flooded with allegations of corruption and at a time when citizen security is under constant threat by criminals and the new commissioner promises to continue working hard. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“I, Chester Clyde Williams, do solemnly and sincerely affirm and declare that I will bear true faith and allegiance to Belize and will uphold the Belize constitution and the law and that I will conscientiously, impartially and to the best of my ability, discharge my duties as Commissioner of Police and do right to all manner of people without fear or favor, affection or ill will.  So help me God.”

The ascension of Police Constable 350 Chester Williams to the highest office of the Belize Police Department culminated today with his installation as the new Commissioner of Police.  The journey for a young officer from Seine Bight Village who enlisted almost twenty years ago, has been long and arduous and, for many, his career achievement as the chief law enforcement officer is well deserved.

“Everybody knows my history in terms of where I was when I joined the ranks of the Belize Police Force then and so for me to have thought then that this day would come, really and truly, I didn’t see it, but as time progresses and my years in the department continued to accumulate and having worked under and seen how many of the former Commissioners of Police operated, it inspired me to want to one day become the Commissioner of Police and I ensured that I worked towards achieving that goal.  The work began by me ensuring that I worked, and I worked hard, I always said that if I am going to do something I am going to do it to the best of my ability.  If I am not going to do it to the best of my ability then there is no use doing it.”

And with that outlook at the forefront of his path, Williams returned to school and qualified himself.  Along the way he transitioned from being the hard-nosed policeman whom everyone had come to know, to an attorney-at-law and a proponent of community engagement.  Today, that effort has paid off.

“I want you to join me first of all in a toast to outgoing Commissioner of Police Allen Whylie for his six years of stellar service as the Commissioner of Police and his thirty-one years in the police department.  He is a man among men.  Toast to Mr. Allen Whylie.  And then to raise a second toast to the Little Giant who is now the Commissioner of Police and has the task of moving the police department forward.  Congratulations to Chester Williams and a toast in his honor.  Here, here!!”

Williams’ work, however, as the new ComPol is just beginning in earnest.

“Indeed to whom much is given, much is deserved and I know that the Belizean people hold me in high regard and they are expecting a lot from me.  I am not going to say that I will fulfill every expectation but I can assure the Belizean people that under my administration we will ensure to do our best to tackle the crime situation problem and we are going to do that working in partnership with the communities and other organizations, both government and non-governmental.”
