Gas Gone Up, Will Electricity Bill Go Up Too?

John Briceño

The last sitting of the House of Representatives for 2018 took place in Belmopan and generally, the members were in good form. A number of issues came up, but we start with the rising cost of fuel, which remains a concern for Belizeans, particularly those in the productive sector where the existing cost per gallon of diesel persistently affects their bottom line.  To make matters worse, Belize Electricity Limited is requesting another increase in the cost per kilowatt hour of electricity.  The request made to the Public Utilities Commission comes almost six months after energy rates were increased earlier this year.  Speaking on adjournment, Leader of the Opposition John Briceño spoke of both in the context of the rising cost of living.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“Today our farmers and the people in the productive sector they have to struggle with the cost of diesel at ten dollars and seventy-five cents per gallon.  Now I know the prime minister will tell you well, be grateful because it was how much last week?  But imagine, even in PG, imagine whenever you go and try to full up your truck and have to pay ten dollars and seventy-five cents a gallon or in PG right now it’s eleven dollars.  Eleven-forty.  Could you imagine the licking you have to take whenever you have to go to the pump Madame Speaker? Just this year, in May, they got an increase and here they come six months later B.E.L. is already announcing that they are going to ask for another price increase, that the average consumer will be paying forty-one cents and a half per kilowatt hour.  And let us remember Madame Speaker, let us remind our Belizeans that the threshold two pay GST on electricity was reduced, so more and more GST is being collected because of these increases in price that has a direct effect on everyone, including the poor people of this country.”
