24 Hours Later Body of Rudy Morales Found at Sea

Rudy Morales

After being missing for more than twenty-four hours, the body of prominent Corozal businessman, forty-one-year-old Rudy Morales of Morales Bus Company was found late this evening. His body was floating on the sea near the Cuello Maya Site in the Corozal District. Morales was part of a fishing expedition that took four men and a minor to the mouth of the New River. The men were in a small boat when it capsized, after taking in water due to the crashing and high waves. Members of the group managed to jump out and get to safety, but the same cannot be said for Morales. The Belize Coast Guard learned of the incident at around eight-thirty on Monday night. A Coast Guard patrol that was stationed in the Corozal Bay was immediately deployed and during the search operation, the capsized vessel was located near the entrance of the New River Bar. A surface search continued throughout the night; however, it was not until this evening that his body was located. News Five’s Hipolito Novelo reports.

The body of forty-one-year-old Corozal businessman, Rudy Morales, owner of Morales Bus Company was found late this evening.  The body was fished out of the sea near the Mayan site of Cuello in the Corozal District.

Morales had been missing for more than twenty four hours. His friends, this afternoon, accompanied a set of coast guard officers to where Morales went missing; the mouth of the New River which empties out in the Corozal Bay.

It is this boat that Morales, along with four other persons, thirty-five-year-old Miguel Angel Riobo, twenty-eight-year-old Nilvert Patt, thirty-year-old Fermin Reyes, and a fifteen-year-old minor, were in when they left from the Corozal pier at three-thirty Monday afternoon. It’s something they would do at least once a week but their fishing expedition would not normally take them to the sea. That’s where they went on Monday and when Morales went missing.

One of the last persons to see him is Riobo, who was present during the fishing trip. According to Riobo, the group arrived at the mouth of the New River safely and began fishing after Morales had powered down the engine. Seconds after they realized that the boat ‘Lone Star’ was taking in water. The waves were choppy and excessive and the boat began to sink and sink fast. Riobo says it was a matter of seconds before ‘Lone Star’ was fully submerged. Three of the men along with the minor decided to swim to safety, to some nearby mangroves. Morales stayed behind on the bow of the boat. The minor was experiencing difficulties reaching the mangroves and he began shouting for help. He was thrown a five-gallon water bottle as an impromptu floating device to assist him. He managed to reach the safety of the mangroves. By this time the waves were lashing the men and pulling them into the sea. Riobo says he had to remove his thick jeans pants and shoes in order to make it to the mangroves. Morales was last seen jumping into the river. The men suspect the crashing waves kept him from making it to the mangroves.

The authorities were alerted and the Belize Coast Guard immediately launched a Search and Rescue operation. Coast Guard Commander Elton Bennet told News Five that surface and subsurface searches were conducted today but it was until this evening that divers located the body. Family and friends appeared at Morales’s residence in Concepcion Village to lend their support. Reporting for News Five, I am Hipolito Novelo.

The Coast Guard reminds mariners that a small craft warning is currently in effect and small crafts are advised to remain in safe harbour.
