Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Heads Basketball Tournament in Chetumal

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Belize is leading a team of young athletes to Chetumal this weekend where they will be participating in a basketball tournament with teenagers from across Mexico.  Last year, the athletes placed second in the annual competition and this time around they are taking an under-eighteen selection with them in hopes of snagging the coveted gold medal.  Prior to departure this morning, News Five spoke with Imam Naveed Mangla and Ahmad Patnett.

“This year we have been invited to many different tournaments.  We have been to Miami, Cancun and Chetumal is the current one that we are going today.  We will be competing in this tournament for the second time.  Last year, our U-17 and U-19, both of them grabbed silver medal and this year we’re taking U-18 and an open team and this will continue until Sunday and we’re hoping and requesting for prayers to all the Belizeans that are listening to us to pray that we bring back a gold medal.”

“The experience has been nice.  It taught us how to play together as one.  Basketball brings people together, we all have the same mentality and we want to win.  Some you will lose, some you will win, but everyone goes with the mentality that they want to bring home the goal for their country and their team.  So the experiences that I have learned is that you make new friends, you learn more, you learn how to be a better person individually.  It teaches you sportsmanship, respect, love.  It teaches you a lot of things.”
